PhD and Pandemic, a New Challenge?
by
Kenji Kopf (ESR 1 / University of Sheffield)
The life wasn’t easy for everyone and affected our routine or our way to work. Compromises has to be done to progress but also to feel satisfy in your research.
PhD student have challenges in normal time and a lot of pression. So, is it possible to cross the fear and still feel satisfy?
No results? What do I do?
Inhale, exhale. The pandemic is not the end of the world…yet.
Remember there are a lot of thing to do in a meantime. The PhD is not just about the results but is a set of your progressions and ideas you want to explain. So, take the time that usually PhD cry for (you know what I mean… #pressure) and write, express yourself!
My thesis will be so short…
First of all, no. The thesis will be affected, obviously, but you can take that in your advantage. Make a plan of what you have and what you need to do.
Practice your domain. Sociology, chemistry, psychology… Use your time to keep you aware of the new outcomes in your specialty.
Just don’t forget the most interesting part: Introduction here I come!
Depressing time, no motivation.
The most important part of all, take time for you. Another thing that PhD have in common, the lack of time for our self. The constant pressure for us is there and can affect our mental and health. So now you are at home, what to do to improve your motivation and bien être? (Yeah at the end you will be bilingual, no need to thank me)
1. Sport is a mean best friend.
Cliché but true. Un esprit sain dans un corps sain ! (A good body for a good spirit).
I can tell you that is work. Choose a time of your day where you are the most comfortable and go sweating! How exciting? (I know right 🤣). If something is good with the pandemic is the new videos that can help you on YouTube (MrandMrsmuscle, for example).
2. The outside world is still beautiful
Every city has a small place that you can find to refresh your mind. Find that place or if you don’t, explore (Dora is right)! And why not mix it with work? Who knows, inspiration can be find everywhere. Do you want some motivation? here it comes:
I know, it makes me want to sing too.
3. Food or not to fast food?
The most sensitive part of the pandemic. I know, the mirror is in the bathroom at my place too…
The food can become a real challenge and play a huge part in your bien être.
You need to listen your body. Diet is a killer and can make things worse. You need to communicate with your body and know what it really wants. Don’t forget to balance your food. Everything is important so don’t eat the same thing every day 🙂
4. Zoom is the new high fashion club.
I know but yes, it is true. You can still see your family and have a good time together. There are a lot of game apps that came out just for you and your evening. There are still people that want to see you so rise your drink and tchin tchin!
At the end…
Don’t forget that you are not alone. We are all in the same boat and we all want to scream sometime. And it is good! You need to evacuate your anxiety and pressure so If you feel that you cannot bear it, just breathe and thing that your nemesis is probably struggling too… No, I am kidding. Don’t forget that you have done so much to achieve this goal, and you found the energy to progress until now! So be brave, be aware, be patient, be fun be… a PhD!
