Why: It is important to know past influential works when making your own pieces.
For our first large project, you will choose a photographer, research them, emulate 3 OR MORE photos of their works, and display your work and research in a publication layout.
*Only one person in each class can study each photographer, so I will confirm your artist before you begin.

NOTE: you will have access to guidelines and optional sentence frames for all written portions of this project, and you can ask for help at any time. The use of any AI will result in a zero without the ability to make up this project and will be reported to admin AND your other teachers... Don't do it, it's easy to spot.
Directions:
Review the FPP slides and take notes on your top 3-5 favorite photographers presented.
Create a folder in your Google drive and label it Your Name_FPP.
Update the SHARE setting to "anyone with the link can view" AND share it directly with your teacher.
Begin researching your subject using the rubric below (Biography and History). You will assemble your writing into a multiple paragraph word document, with NO header (you don't need to use your name, date, period like you would in a normal class).
Don't Panic! If necessary, use THESE sentence frames to complete the writing portion. If you are comfortable writing, feel free to write in your own style.

Name:
NIcknames (if any):
Where they were born:
Date of Birth:
Date and place of death (if applicable):
Education:
Context/ Set the scene: Include 3 details about the time period and 3 significant events that were happening at that time in history
When/ how did they get into photography:
Style of Photography: where did they shoot, what style pf photography did they have. Show examples.
Contribution to photography: why are they important? How did their work impact or influence society?
Interesting story/ quote about this person:
Why did you choose this photographer?
How did you do it? What was your process in camera and in PS to emulate their work?
Using the information you learned about your artist, (how they worked, where, what their intentions were...). Channel all that knowledge and create 2 images in their style.
Example, if your artist wanted to preserve nature...
Think: where can you photograph that needs preservation?
What is it to emulate a photo? How is it different than recreating a photo?
Recreating an artwork means closely copying the original image—its composition, lighting, and subject—to make a near duplicate.
Emulating an artwork means capturing the artist’s style, mood, or technique while creating your own unique version inspired by their work.
To help you understand the difference between emulation and recreation, take a look at some emulations and recreations at this link:
And here are some more student examples:
The student clearly captured the artist's original idea, but created their own unique interpretation of it. Their photo emulates Mondrian's.
While the student's work is impressive, it is a recreation of Van Gogh's original painting.
Your turn: what do you think? Is the student emulating or recreating?
Ask yourself: is the student adding their own unique interpretation or is it a duplicate of the original image?
