Fourth grade scientists will use a hands-on discovery based approach to figuring out scientific investigations presented by FOSS (Full Optic Science System). Using a science notebook and tools, students will record and analyze their observations while they focus on two main areas of study:
- Earth and Sun - The Earth and Sun Module consists of three sequential investigations, each designed to introduce students to objects we see in the sky. Through outdoor observations made during the day and at night, active simulations, readings, videos, and discussions, students study the Sun, Moon, and stars to learn that these objects move in regular and predictable patterns that can be observed, recorded, and analyzed.
- Energy - The Energy Module consists of five sequential investigations, each designed to introduce or reinforce concepts in physical science. The investigations provide opportunities for students to explore the natural and human-made worlds by observing and manipulating materials in focused settings using simple tools. Students will learn how magnets interact, how to build electrical circuits, and how energy is transferred. Our culminating project at the end of the year is a Toy Project, where students design and build a functioning toy made out of recyclable materials that has an electrical component.
