Collaborating
Digitally collaborating with other learners, both within the classroom and without, is important for Self-Directed learners. These tools provide some options. Some require teacher/mentor oversight, such as Skype/Hangout, yet can allow students to collaborate with other 'birds of a feather'.
Persevering
Some of these tools require teacher set-up and initiation, and are more like content-delivery sites, but students can move through them at their own pace. Alternatively, students and their mentors can act as teachers, collecting resources and planning action to learn.
These tools are more content specific, but allow students to persevere as they learn at their own pace.
These tools are more narrow in focus, but all can provide opportunities for persevering.
