Course Description: Emphasis in this course is placed on speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. These skills are developed through classroom discussion, role-playing, listening and recording in the language laboratory. There is also a comprehensive study of advanced grammatical patterns and conversational vocabulary. The culture of the French-speaking world and French art and history are a key element of the curriculum. Literature is introduced in the form of literary excerpts and the study of the famous novel Le Petit Prince.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS & STUDENT EXPECTATIONS

1.) Attendance will be taken each period. Please be on time to class.

2.) Students who are absent on assessment day will make up that quiz/test their next day back to school, unless significant class time was missed due to illness. Check my website calendar while absent.

3.) Cheating of any kind, including plagiarism, copying others' work or use of online translators without permission and passing work off as your own will result in a zero.

4.) Projects deadlines are to be respected. Projects handed in late will result in a 10 point loss per school day late. Those scheduled to make a formal oral presentation (solo or group), and are absent without informing me by email run the risk of getting a zero on that presentation.

5.) No cell phone use or text messaging is allowed during class. Please keep phones off and IPODS out of sight unless being used for class activities.

GRADING BREAKDOWN - HONORS FRENCH 3

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS (20% of grade)

Formative assessments are small, incremental checks for comprehension and vocabulary retention. They are generally intended to give the teacher and the student an idea of where we are in preparation for the summative assessment. Formative assessments break down into skill-building exercises and quizzes.

Skill-building work Assignments can consist of workbook exercises, worksheets, language lab exercises, pair activities, listening comprehension and speaking proficiency checks.

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS (80% of grade)

Summative assessments are larger assessments of a substantial amount of material that demonstrate a student's knowledge and skills of the major core competencies in the areas of listening comprehension, speaking proficiency, short writings, reading comprehension and cultural awareness. Summative assessments break down into essays and projects or presentations.

Projects are normally whole unit and/or cultural assessments that provide students with a creative way to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. Projects can be in the form of oral presentations (solo or group) with a written reflection, poster projects with oral presentations, research papers or powerpoint presentations.

RETAKE POLICY

Students who score below proficient (80%0 on any summative assessment and wish to retake that assessment (or a portion of that assessment) will be allowed to do so within two weeks. It is the student's responsibility to inform me in a timely manner of their intention to do a retake. Here are the stipulations:

1. Makeups are granted for any assessment with a grade below 80.

2. The highest grade you can receive on a retake is 80.

3. The student must come for at least one extra help session before taking the assessment, which will be the same format and content as the original but containing different questions or writing prompts.

COURSE COMPETENCIES - HONORS FRENCH 3


1. Students will demonstrate in both written and spoken form their ability to discuss traveling in Francophone countries using proper noun articles, object pronouns and new verbs in the present tense, passé composé, imparfait and futur proche with an advanced level of phonetic accuracy and fluency.

2. Students will demonstrate an understanding of authentic audio and textual sources from Francophone countries and the diverse populations of these countries.

3. Students will demonstrate in both written and spoken form their ability to discuss and analyze French art and history using the passé composé vs. the imperfect in proper context in new affirmative and negative formats as well as analyze and interpret art using descriptive and comparative language with an advanced level of phonetic accuracy and fluency.

4. Students will demonstrate in both written and spoken form their ability to discuss and interpret the novel Le Petit Prince using the future tense, the conditional and subjunctive moods and new pronouns to exchange thoughts, express opinions, decipher meanings and create original ideas while reading the novel and listening to audio resources related to the text.
