Unit 05 Quadratic Functions and Complex Numbers

By the end of this unit students can:

• discover by pointwise plotting what the major features of a quadratic function graph are
• given the equation of a quadratic function, calculate the location of the vertex, and use this information to sketch the graph
• given a quadratic equation, solve it using the quadratic formula, and use the results to find the x-intercepts of a quadratic function
• given a quadratic equation whose solutions are complex numbers, write the solutions in terms of i, and check them by substitution
• given three points on the graph of a quadratic function, or the vertex and one other point, find the particular equation of the function
• use a quadratic function or a linear function as a mathematical model for a real-world situation
