Class Prospectus

Algebra II is a challenging course where students continue their study of advanced algebraic concepts. Topics to be covered include functions, polynomials, complex numbers, systems of equations, inequalities, introduction to trigonometry, and statistics. The use of appropriate technology, including graphing calculators, for the purposes of instruction and assessment is expected in this course.

Upon completion of this course:

1. Students will demonstrate the ability to use and extend properties of complex number systems(includes both real and imaginary numbers).

2. Students will demonstrate the ability to analyze and use structure in expressions to solve problems.

3. Students will demonstrate the ability to solve problems when applying concepts of polynomial and rational expressions.

4. Students will demonstrate the ability to create and use algebraic models to connect mathematical concepts and properties when solving real-world problems.

5. Students will demonstrate the ability to explain and justify reasoning when solving equations, inequalities, and systems of equations.

6. Students will demonstrate the ability to interpret, analyze, and use functions when applied in a variety of contexts, including real-world phenomena.

7. Students will demonstrate the ability to build functions that model relationships between two quantities.

8. Students will demonstrate the ability to distinguish among situations that can be represented with linear, quadratic, and exponential models and provide evidence to support reasoning.

9. Students will demonstrate the ability to apply algebraic models to express geometric relationships.

10. Students will demonstrate the ability to apply statistical methods or reasoning to summarize, represent, and interpret categorical and quantitative data.

11. Students will demonstrate the ability to make inferences and justify or critique conclusions.

Textbook and Replacement Cost:

We will be using an eBook created by EHS teachers that can be downloaded from the class website. Each student may be issued a previously used paper textbook at the beginning of the school year as well, and is responsible for that book until the last day of classes. The replacement cost for that book is $65.

Materials:

Students should have a binder or notebook for notes and homework, dated each day. Scientific calculators are helpful to have, although not required, as we do have a class set. Students should come to class each day with a pencil.

Technology:

Technology will be used often in this class. We will often have a set of iPads in the classroom, but students will be encouraged AT APPROPRIATE TIMES to use the school's wifi network and any smart devices they may have. All other times the phone or device should be put away and silenced.

Grading:

QUARTER GRADE:

Formative Assessments: 20%

-Hw/Practice Challenge Problems/Check-ins/Quizzes

Summative Assessments: 80%

-Unit Tests/Challenge Problems/Performance Tasks

FINAL GRADE:

Q1: 22.5%

Retakes:

The class retake policy will follow the school-wide retake policy(See retake pdf below).

Expectations:

Students are expected to be in class on time and participate with maximum effort.

Students are expected to be in school and track down assignments and notes if they miss school.

Students are expected to follow school rules concerning respect, hats, food, and drinks.

Homework:

Homework should be expected nightly. Homework assignments will be posted on this website.
