Effective 2/14/22 the Derry Cooperative School board has raised the daily substitute rate of pay and the school based substitute rate of pay (school based subs are designated by district to work 4 days per week and based in one school).

The Derry School Board hired the NH School Boards Association to facilitate the superintendent search. We will be working with P. Alan Pardy of The Bryan Group.

Per the guidance, the Superintendent Search Committee has 12 members. The SAU office submitted seven names and one name was pulled out of a hat. The school-based administrators worked as a group and named the school administrators and parents. The respective unions were asked to name teachers and teaching assistants. The school board chair and vice chair chose the School Board representatives in discussion with individual members. We chose three members because we assign three members on all major committees.

The 12 members are:

• 2 Teachers: Meg Morse-Barry, GHHMS; Kelly Carey, DVS

• 2 Teaching Assistants: Cheryl Morin, EDMES; Kate Gleason, Grinnell and EPB

• 3 School Board Members: Erika Cohen, Brenda Willis, Jessica Ring

• 2 School-Based Administrators: Chris McCallum, DVS; Kim Carpentino, GHHMS

• 2 Parents: Amity Ziegler, WRBMS; Michele Battaglia, EDMES

• 1 SAU Employee: Jerold White, Assistant Director of Student Services

During the process, there will also be a chance for public input. Committee meetings are open to the public, but like all committee meetings, the public cannot comment.

Also known as The Nation’s Report Card, NAEP has provided important information about how students are performing academically since 1969.

Dear Derry Cooperative School District Families:

I hope that this message finds your family safe after today’s snow and that you had a wonderful Holiday and New Year. Today’s update will focus on two areas, the first being the NH Department of Health and Human Services (NH DHHS) Updated Isolation and Quarantine Guidance. The NH

DHHS has adapted the Center for Disease Control’s (CDC’s) updated recommendations. Please refer to the NH DHHS updated Isolation and Quarantine Guidance. You may also refer to the updated Isolation and Quarantine Recommendations for the General Public.

Our Derry Cooperative School District nurses are working diligently to make certain the newest NH DHHS guidance is clear. A brief presentation regarding the changes will be made at the Derry School Board meeting on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, and changes will take effect for students beginning on Wednesday, January 12, 2022. With the increasing number of positive COVID-19 cases, we are extremely grateful for the incredible attention to detail and the care for all students’ needs that our school nurses demonstrate each day.

The second part of this message includes information about the NH Rapid Response Access Point. This service became effective beginning on January 1, 2022. Please see the brochure for additional information.

For all new and returning students we utilize the Powerschool Registration system. This online system allows us to quickly obtain annual, up-to-date student information. In addition, our families can electronically sign annual permission forms for school district policies such as the Technology Acceptable Use Policy and School Handbooks.

Beginning at 8:00 am, on Monday, January 10, you will be able to click a link on the district website to register your child for Kindergarten in the 2022-2023 school year.

The registration process must include the documents listed here. These documents may be uploaded as images into the electronic form or, after the online information has been entered, you may deliver the documents to your child's school in person.

In this workshop we will review what typical child development looks like, what influences it, the possible signs of concerns, and what parents can do when they are worried.

As a reminder to parents on days when there is snow on the playground be sure to send your child to school with coat, gloves, hat, snow pants and boots. Students will be allowed to play on the snow if they are have these items.

During the winter months, please send your child to school with another pair of shoes to change into so your child is not wearing winter boots in school all day long. Avoid wearing slippers in school (unless otherwise directed by the teacher or school for special events) as these can be a safety concern inside and outside the building.

We continue to have outdoor recess unless the temperature falls below twenty degrees (wind chill is taken into consideration). It is therefore important that proper winter clothing is worn during this time period.

If you would like to check the temperature please refer to the School District webpage. The school will use the “real feel” temperature to determine if students go out for recess.

Note: During this time of COVID teachers will take students outside for short periods of time even if "real feel" is below 20 degrees.

All adults will be required to be fingerprinted.

The Holiday Shoppe is back! This year the event will take place on Friday December 10 during the school day. Holiday Shoppe is designed to provide students with an opportunity to purchase gifts for family and friends at school in a safe, comfortable and friendly environment, without their parents following them. It is also an educational experience, where students learn the importance of saving their money and even budgeting for holiday surprises. All purchases are “kid-priced” and are $10 or less. Volunteers will be available to help the younger shoppers navigate the gifts and help them budget their money. Students will be able to wrap their gifts in their classrooms after they shop.

Fliers and Gift Guide envelopes will be sent home with your children. The gift guides are great ways to list what gifts need to be bought and how much to spend on each gift. This year we will be offering popcorn for students twice per month (The 1st Friday and 3rd Friday of each month)

Popcorn Fridays will begin on December 3 and run through May 20th.

The cost will be $6.00 per student for the year. Please send in the pre-payment for attached with payments by Wednesday, December 1st. (The pre-payment form was also sent home in a paper version).

**Please make checks payable to "DVS PTA" and reference "Popcorn" in the memo section. Please send a separate check for popcorn, it cannot be deposited with payments for other school items (ice cream, for example). Any checks received that are for more than just popcorn will have to be returned to the parent.

Derry Village School is scheduled to present to the School Board on Tuesday, November 30.

This year Mrs. Amy Landry will present Math Club to the School Board. We thank Amy for taking the time to plan, organize students, and present to the School Board. Math Club is a new club this year has been an overwhelming success. We are excited to share this with the School Board.

We will also be honoring Victoria Little as Volunteer of the Year. While technically Victoria has moved on to West Running Brook we did not have the opportunity to honor her last year. Victoria did a lot for DVS during the time her daughter attended the school. A very worthy candidate.

DCSD Educational Visioning Group

Virtual Educational Visioning Overview

The DCSD is looking for one parent from Derry Village School to join this Educational Visioning Group.

During the months of November and December 2021, the Derry Cooperative School District (DCSD) Visioning Group – a group of DCSD administrators, teachers, students, parents, and community members will participate in two Educational Visioning Workshops run by New Vista Design and Lavallee Brensinger Architects. Each workshop will be a 2.5 hour long collaborative virtual session designed to inform the DCSD Facilities Master Plan. Participants will be led through a step-by-step visioning process aimed at capturing their best thinking about DCSD’s current and future educational goals and priorities and connecting them to best practices and possibilities in innovative school facility design.

Workshops will take place virtually, from 6:00-8:30 PM and are designed to be highly participatory, engaging, and informative. The educational and architectural goals set during these workshops will have a direct and tangible impact on the development of the DCSD Facility Master Plan. We hope that you will consider taking part in these visioning sessions and sharing your ideas and dreams for how to best support the future development of DCSD’s educational programming and facilities.

WS One will take place on Wednesday, November 17, 2021, from 6:00 – 8:30 PM and explore the following topics:

• Priority Goals for the DCSD Facilities Master Plan

• 21st century teaching and learning practices that are now in practice or envisioned for the district

• Future Ready Learning Goals that distill the group’s best thinking with regard to DCSD’s current and future educational programming and priorities

• 21st Century Design Patterns that innovative elementary schools throughout Massachusetts and U.S. have put into practice in order to make their forward-thinking learning goals come alive on the level of facility design

WS Two will take place on Wednesday, December 8, 2021, from 6:00 – 8:30 PM and explore the following topics:

• Guiding Principles and priorities for the design of DCSD facilities

• Blue Sky Ideas that participants would like to see realized within DCSD school facilities

• Bubble Diagramming of conceptual design ideas for DCSD school facilities

• Key Talking Points that the group think it important to communicate to the Derry community

• If your preference is to schedule a virtual conference, please respond to the conference invitation from your child’s teacher(s) and they will then schedule a Google Meet option for you.

Parents are reminded that PE classes will continue to use outdoor space for the rest of November (at the very least). Measurable snow, pouring rain, or temps below 20 degrees would be three things keeping us indoors. Please continue to send your child to school with jackets, sweatshirts, hats, gloves, etc. they may need for the cooler outdoor temperatures.

Reflections is an opportunity to promote the love of arts in students. Students submit original art (forms of literature, visual arts, or photography) that will be on display at the Derry Coffee Factory and then move to state and maybe even national competition.

Free COVID-19 Testing in Partnership with the State of NH

This event at Derry Village includes a fall clean-up (leaf removal, cleaning up flower beds, etc), and pumpkin painting.

Currently scheduled for 10/23. Rain day 10/24.

Don't forget-outdoor event this Saturday from 2-4pm at DVS. Bring your kids to paint pumpkins with us at Derry Village. We will provide the pumpkins and paint as well as Hot Chocolate. We ask the adults to lend a hand, if possible, in cleaning up the grounds, its BYOR (bring your own rake). Thank you to Debra Budra McClory for organizing this fun event!

Conferences are scheduled on Wednesday, November 10, 2021, when students have the day off from school. We are writing to inform you of a change in our reporting procedure regarding positive COVID-19 cases. In an effort to improve clarity and communication, we will simplify the notification process. Please reference the information below detailing this change.

Moving forward, families will only be notified if there is a positive COVID-19 case within their child’s classroom cohort.

We will no longer be notifying families of each positive case within the building if the case is not within their child’s cohort. Instead, families will be provided with an update from building administrators informing them of the number of positive cases within the building at the end of each school week. The District-wide number of positive cases will continue to be provided at the end of each school week at https://www.sau10.org/coronavirus/covid-19-cases.

Thank you so much for the overwhelming positive response to the DVS Math Club. In grades 2-5 we have 99 students participating in the club!

At this time, our plan to accommodate this many students is to have grades 2 and 5 meet IN PERSON on Thursday, October 14th from 3-4 pm and have grades 3 & 4 utilize an online training session via Google Classroom (which can be done at any time). Then on November 4th, grades 3 & 4 will meet IN PERSON from 3-4 pm while grades 2 & 5 have an online training session via Google Classroom (which can be done at any time).

We will not be competing this fall (November) so we can hold more training sessions prior to competing in the spring.

**If your child is to be dismissed to DVSXDC, they will be walked to a staff member in charge.

Online Google Classroom Training Sessions:

Students will have an online task(s) for them to complete. Students can work on the tasks anytime that week and submit their work upon completion. I will send an email for students to join the Math Club Classroom. Please have them look in their school email account to find the code to join. Once they have joined they can access the tasks.

Students across the school in grades 1-5 have neared completion of the Fall NWEA assessment. This assessment is also called MAP Growth assessment.

NWEA stands for Northwest Evaluation Association. NWEA is a non-profit organization that has assessed over 4.5 million students. NWEA has a presence in 49 foreign countries, 50 states, and 3400 districts.

MAP stands for Measures of Academic Progress. MAP is an online assessment that is aligned to the Common Core standards.

These computerized tests are adaptive and students complete an assessment in Reading and Mathematics. When taking a MAP test, the difficulty of each question is based on how well a student answers all of the previous questions. As the student answers correctly, questions become more difficult. If the student answers incorrectly, the questions become easier. In an optimal test, a student answers approximately half the items correctly and half incorrectly. The final score is an estimate of the student’s achievement level.

The assessment will be conducted again later this year. At the end of the year students receive a summary report. Families can request this report at any time after the assessment is taken from the classroom teacher.

Each year on the first Friday in October, World Smile Day devotes a day to smiles and spreading random acts of kindness.

If someone smiles at you, you’re bound to smile back. A smile often expresses a feeling, encouragement to someone, or serves as a greeting. If you don’t smile enough, #WorldSmileDay is the perfect day to start.

The day is wildly popular in Worcester, MA, the birthplace of the yellow smiley face.

You can celebrate the day in other ways, too.

• Do a random act of kindness for someone.

• Use a smiley face emoji on every text you send.

• Spread cheer by handing out smiley face stickers.

• Give a smile to everyone you come across.

• Tell someone a funny joke.

• Play happy songs like “Happy” by Pharrell Williams or “Don’t Worry Be Happy” by Bobby McFerrin.

At Derry Village on Friday, wear a smiley face, wear yellow, or just smile all day.

RE: DVS Running Club Dismissal

Dear Running Club Families,

We are so excited to have 65 student athletes joining us this year. We had a fantastic first practice and we are looking forward to watching your students progress as both teammates and athletes over the next few weeks. With such a high number of participants, we underestimated the need for a more structured pick-up process. Please read the following in hopes for a smoother dismissal from the running club next Wednesday, September 22.

• When you pull into the horseshoe driveway, stay on the “School Side” (the right hand lane closest to the building)

• Please pull all the way around to the front of the horseshoe circle and park your car

• For running club pick up only, we ask that you exit your car and wait under the shelter for your athlete. Once you have your child you may go back to your car and depart safely.

• We will use the “flagpole side” (left lane of the driveway) to allow cars to exit once they are loaded. We do need to keep traffic moving in this lane to allow parents of Extended Day (after school daycare) to come in and out to pick up their students. Please do not park in this left “flagpole” lane. Please be patient as Daycare loads cars in this lane.

• Once the first set of cars has loaded and exited, the next set of cars will be allowed in to the horseshoe driveway to follow the same procedure. 1. Pull all the way forward, park and exit your car, 2. come under the shelter to collect your child, and 3. use the left lane to pull away if traffic is still stopped in the right lane.

We ask for your flexibility and patience during pick-up, especially in the next number of weeks as we establish this new routine.

This Thursday, September 23, 2021 we have a school district-wide Early Release day. The school day begins at its normally scheduled time (8:35am), but students are dismissed early beginning at 12:45pm. Students follow a modified schedule which includes lunch and recess. Students will be dismissed in the usual way two hours earlier than normal. Staff use the remainder of the day for professional learning.

PickUp Patrol is a cloud-based web application that automates the after-school dismissal process by combining powerful tools for school offices and a convenient mobile "app" for parents. It eliminates the need for parents to write notes or make phone calls to change their children’s after-school plans which increases office productivity, decreases classroom interruptions, and assists with the accuracy of end-of-day student safety.

The Derry Cooperative School District places the greatest value on the health and safety of our students and staff. We all must continue to implement our District's procedures to maintain safe operations within the school setting.

The New Hampshire Department of Public Health and Safety (NH DPHS) continues to recommend a low threshold for testing people with new signs/symptoms of a viral syndrome (e.g., fever, chills, body or muscle aches) or respiratory viral infections (e.g., sinus congestion, sore throat, cough, runny nose), that could be consistent with a COVID-19 infection.

Parents/guardians are asked to work with the District by taking an active role in a daily health assessment of their child(ren), before they arrive at school. Please note that if a child has any signs of illness they must be kept home to protect the school and community at large.

As we all navigate this new, constantly changing world of returning to school during a pandemic, the PTA hopes to adjust and continue to bring as many “safe” activities as possible back to DVS. Historically, we have been an extremely active PTA and through years of hard work, we have a healthy budget. We want to continue to support and provide awesome opportunities for all our students. As proud as we are of all the stuff we have done in the past, we want to focus on the future and make this an amazing year. But we need help! Dear Families,

It has become necessary to make a change for those students catching the Fairways Bus.

Currently, the bus is crowded. In an effort to reduce the numbers of students on the bus and keep everyone safe we have decided to split students between two buses (Bus #10 and Bus #30).

Beginning Monday, September 13, 2021 we will be dividing the students between the two buses.

• Students in Grades 3-5 will catch Bus #10 in the morning and in the afternoon.

• Students in Grades K-2 will catch Bus #30 in the morning and in the afternoon.

Please note; If families prefer that siblings stay together on the same the bus you can have your children catch Bus #30.

The Derry Cooperative School District is creating a Roadmap to Reopening Schools plan for the 2021-2022 school year, as required by the New Hampshire Department of Education. A draft of the 2021-2022 plan is currently located on the District's website.

This past year was difficult for a lot of families. We work with a local organization called 68 Hours of Hunger. They provide food bags for students to take home for the weekend. We have had several families participate in this program over the years as needed. We very discretely give the bags to students to put in their backpacks for the weekend. Parents are also welcome to pick the bag up on Fridays if they are more comfortable with that.

Completing an application takes less than 10 minutes and application information remains private and confidential. Only one application per household is needed.

In-school dental treatments include a dental cleaning, brushing instruction, topical fluoride varnish, decay-stopping fluoride, dental sealants, and temporary fillings. There is no drilling, no shots and no pain. Sealants are coatings that protect the chewing surfaces of teeth. Decay-stopping fluoride treatments, for back teeth only, help stop a cavity from getting bigger and make it feel better (also called SDF- silver diamine fluoride). You can tell it worked if cavity becomes hard and black over time. This permission is for fall and/or spring visits.
