The Derry Cooperative School District is accepting Pre-Registration information for all prospective Kindergarten students for the 2020-2021 school year.

Turkey Shoot

Come join us for our first ever basketball free throw competition also known as a Turkey Shoot this time of year! This event is open to all DVS students K-5. Compete against fellow classmates in your grade and bring an adult to be your teammate (parent, guardian, grandparent, uncle, aunt, sibling, friend). The cost is $5 per 2 person team to play. Based on free throw points, there will be one first place team from each grade. First place prize will be a frozen turkey to bring home along with a turkey hat to wear proudly on Thanksgiving day! Lucky hopes to see you there!

Veteran's Breakfast

You are cordially invited to attend West Running Brook Middle School’s eleventh annual Veterans’ Breakfast on Friday, November 8th, from 8:00 - 9:30 a.m. Veterans, along with state and local dignitaries, will be invited to attend.

WRB students, who are members of Kids Care Club, will serve breakfast and the entire student body will be present to honor our Veterans.

We would like to have veterans who are interested to join small groups of students in their Advisories to talk about their service to our country and to also serve as a sounding board for their questions. This will be from 9:30 - 10:00 a.m. When you RSVP, please indicate if you have interest to serve in this capacity.

We thought it might be a great thing to all meet at DVS and walk to WRB together. We could meet at 7:30am and walk up the hill to the Middle School.

Picture Re-Take Day

Picture Re-Take Day is October 24, 2019. If your child needs to have his/her picture retaken, please bring the picture packet in to school on this day. A new picture will be taken. If your child was absent on September 12, 2019, they must have their picture taken October 24, 2019. If you have any questions, please call Mrs. Soucy at 432-1233.

Jackets and Holiday Assistance 2019-2020

The School Social Worker is able to provide resources and supports to students and families. If your student(s) would benefit from a new winter jacket and / or holiday assistance, please email or call Alicia Triplett, LMFT, School Social Worker, at (603) 260-2793 or atriplett@sau10.org.

Each year, Parkland Hospital generously purchases new winter jackets for our Derry students. If your child is in need of a winter jacket, please call your School Social Worker.

For holiday assistance, The Salvation Army and The Derry Community Fund are available to help. Please choose one agency for assistance.

The Salvation Army: Call 434-7790 to make an appointment. Specific documentation required. Christmas assistance only.

The Derry Community Fund: Go to www.DNHCF.org to download an application or email at DNHCF1@gmail.com for questions. The Derry Community Fund is able to assist with Thanksgiving and / or Christmas. A Basic Overview of NH’s Special Education Process

Delayed Opening

Derry Village Elementary School Thursday, October 17, 2019. Please be advised that there are multiple road closures affecting our bus routes. As a result, the Derry Cooperative School District PK-8 will observe a two-hour delayed opening on Thursday October 17, 2019. There will be no morning kindergarten or preschool. This delay for transportation includes Out-of-District placements as well. Please be safe as you travel today.

Arrival Reminders

• Stay in your car. At morning car drop off parents are reminded that they must stay in their cars. This facilitates a smooth and efficient drop off procedure.

• Passenger side. At car drop off please have your child get out of the car on the passenger side of the car. It is very dangerous for children to get out on the driver’s side.

• Arrive in good time. Rushing to get your child to dash out of the car to reach the classroom before the school bell rings is a recipe for disaster in terms of child safety. Would you rather your child receive a tardy notice or risk an accident?

• Any student arriving after the tardy bell [8:35am] must be signed in to school at the office by the parent/guardian dropping off the student.

• No Idling Zone. Parents are reminded that the drop off bay at the front of the school is designated an “No Idling Zone”. The purpose of the No Idling Zone is to reduce pollution from idling buses and cars that negatively affect a child’s healthy lung growth and development. Children are more vulnerable to the impacts of vehicle pollution than other populations.

Volunteers

If you are planning to volunteer for events or activities in the school this year you will need to be fingerprinted. This is especially important if you will be working with students. Please contact the office 432-1233 you have not been previously fingerprinted and plan on volunteering. Next Wednesday, October 10, from 4-7:30pm there is a fingerprinting night for volunteers at the SAU. Appointments are required.

WEE Deliver

The USPS affiliated WEE deliver program will begin at DVS for the 2019-2020 school year. In 1990 the Postal Service introduced the Wee Deliver In-School Literacy Program to help improve reading and writing skills of elementary school children. It has grown to include more than 20,000 schools across the country.

WEE Deliver encourages students to write letters. The program at DVS, is led by Mrs. Zbieg but is student run. Please support the program by writing letters to your children and depositing them in the mailbox in the school foyer.

Office Reminder

Parents are reminded to notify the office if there are any changes of phone number or contact details. It is important that the office has current contact information. Please update this information in PowerSchool.

October Health Spotlight-Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease

Hand, Foot, & Mouth disease is a viral infection that is seen throughout the year but most commonly in the late summer or fall months.

Symptoms may include -

• Blisters in the mouth (cheeks, tongue, and gums)

• Blisters may be seen on the palms, fingers, buttocks, and on the soles of the feet.

• Low grade fever

• Discomfort/pain in blistered areas.

Typically, symptoms of Hand, Foot, and Mouth last for 7-10 days.

Prevention-

1. Frequent hand washing, especially before eating, using the bathroom

2. No sharing of drinks/ eating utensils

3. Cough/ sneeze into tissue and dispose of properly

The Derry Cooperative School District will implement Blizzard Bags again for the 2019-2020 school year. A Blizzard Bag contains assignments for students to complete at home during inclement weather days. Please make sure that your child’s classroom teacher has your email address. Stay tuned. Derry Village School will once again offer the Sunshine Math program. This program is a voluntary math enrichment opportunity which involves the use of critical thinking and problem-solving skills to find solutions to math problems.

PowerSchool Registration

Thank you again, to all who have submitted registration information through our new PowerSchool Registration process. This is a reminder for those still needing to complete forms. It is important that we complete this process as soon as possible, as the information is essential in assisting schools to provide for accurate student and family information. Please email DerryRegistration@sau10.org to request the snapcode be resent if you are still waiting to receive this information. Please list all the children you need to register. Each school has a computer set up for parents/guardians who require access to a computer. Paper copies of the registration packet are also available from your child’s school office. Please email DerryRegistration@sau10.org if you have any difficulty with this process. Thank you again for your assistance with this new procedure.

Free and Reduced Lunch

Parents/guardians are reminded to apply for Free and Reduced Meals if you had done so last year, or if you believe you may qualify now. Applications can be found on the district website's Free and Reduced Meals page. Please contact Susan Boroskas (sboroskas@sau10.org, (603) 432-1231) if you need assistance completing the application. (Also, note that if a child qualifies for Free and Reduced Meals, they can get their breakfast for FREE saving a reduced meals child 30 cents per day.)

Volunteer Policies and Procedures

We encourage families to be a part of our school community and want all to be aware of our requirements in order to do so. Additionally, we would like to make available to all parents, a free training through Primex on Bullying in grades K-12. The instructions to take the training is also attached. This is not a requirement, just an offer.

Computer Speakers

Do you have computer speakers at home you are not using? We would gladly take any computer speakers you can donate to a classroom.

AHERA Management Plan

As required by law, the Derry Cooperative School District must notify you of the location of the AHERA Management Plan. The AHERA Management Plan is a plan which describes the location of asbestos containing materials within the school buildings. The plan is located in each school administrative office. It may be reviewed by contacting the administration or administrative secretary of each school.

Derry Cooperative School District Lunch Menus 2019-2020

The school Child Nutrition Program is self-funded, running without monetary aid from the School District or Town of Derry. They rely heavily on student meal payments to keep their own payables current, so they appreciate all your efforts to keep money in your student accounts.

Elementary school lunch, including Full Day Kindergarten students. Paid = $2.80, Reduced = $.40. All Lunches include Milk, Fruits, Veggies, Lunch Entrée, Whole Grain Crackers, and Dessert when available. Click here for all meal prices.

(2) You can also follow us on Twitter @DVS_NH We will be using this communication tool throughout the school year. (3) Staff can be contacted via email or phone. Pick Up Patrol

At Derry Village School we will continue using a system that will help parents make dismissal changes efficiently and conveniently for your child. It is called PickUp Patrol. PickUp Patrol eliminates the need for you to write notes or make phone calls to change your children’s after-school plans. Once signed up you will receive an email with information. The website and app are user friendly and guide you through setting everything up.
