Chemistry - 12th Bio Lab

This Main Lesson introduces students to the broad field of biochemistry lab work. The course focuses on the chemistry, detection, analysis, and role of chemicals in living organisms. In addition to techniques used in previous years, students expand upon their knowledge and use of chromatography, and chemical detection and analysis. Through a series of labs, students study several of the key biochemical groups: carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, and proteins. Students take notes, prepare and carry out laboratory experiments, and compile a portfolio of their work. There is a lab activity that tests the student’s ability to perform a series of identification tests and develop a corresponding flow chart. The final lab is a design activity based on an assessment of the organic matter in biomass and soil samples from our immediate area in which the students carry out the lab activity, and based on their experience and the results, design a lab for future classes.
