SALINE FFA
MOVABLE MODULAR GARDEN PROJECT

  • Developing a community garden to supplement fresh fruits and vegetables to the school CULINARY ARTS PROGRAM or local food pantry. 
    • Goal to raise 500LB of fresh produce.
    • The challenge is to grow food on concrete and demonstrating how food can be grown on roofs and    paved areas not being used.
  • Creating a Community Supported Agriculture program that provides fresh produce to families in need
  • Hosting community workshops on container and backyard gardening and other sustainable food practices.
  • Reduction of storm water flow and nutrients into retention pond by providing a living filter to a concrete area.
  • UNIQUE CONCEPT:
    • Use GreenTech modules which can be moved back to greenhouse at the end of the growing season to recycle and compost soil and waste plant materials
    • GreenTech modules can be used directly on the concrete courtyard next to culinary arts.
    • A Vestil All Terrain Pallet Jack can be used to move the modules back to the composting and greenhouse area, then starting in the greenhouse for next spring.

LTS FOOD FOR ALL GRANT

Feeding the world-starting at home with FFA: Food for All grants! The National FFA is pleased to announce the availability of funds, to help fight hunger, in the form of a competitive grant process for chapters. FFA: Food For All grants are provided through funding from Farmers Feeding the World and the Howard G. Buffett Foundation.


ProMix BX was used to insure proper drainage and encourage symbiotic relationship with mycorrizae fungi.

Modules were moved to the west wall after students discovered the ones on the east wall were getting too much sun and heat.
Courtyard View
Removing burlap and twine and scoring roots to encourage root development in the container.
Students tamp soil to ensure good root contact.
Umbrellas were added by the interior decorating class to enhance the ambiance of the patio and reduce heat on Hive customers.
