Hubble Ultra Deep Field

Please read through this first and answer these 2 questions.

How are spiral galaxies dated?

How are ellipitical galaxies dated?

All images are from NASA.

Mission 1

First, examine the objects in the photos above. Then choose objects that represent the colors and objects pictured below. Write their numbers in the space on your data table. These are now your reference objects.

Mission 2

Second, decide the color and shape of each numbered object in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. Some of these objects are difficult to identify so use your references to help. Write the number of the object in the correct box in the data table.

Mission 3

Third, compare your findings with fellow scientists in the classroom. In science, there is usually disagreement but the important thing is to be able to back up your claims with being able to explain how you arrived at your answer.

Discuss These Questions:

1. List 3 objects on which you and a fellow scientist agreed. Use their numbers for identity.

2. List 3 objects on which you disagreed.

3. Give two reasons why you think you and your fellow scientist disagreed.

You may now wish to change some of you conclusions regarding the objects....

Mission 4

Fourth, Now think about your data.

1. What is the most common shape that you see?

2. What is the most common color that you see?

Mission 5

Fifth, predict what some of the unidentified objects in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field may be. Many of the objects in the picture are too far away for us to be able to see what shape they are, but we can still see what color they are. Choose 3 objects that are so faint and small that you cannot tell the shape but can still tell the color. From their colors and your work in Mission 2, tell what shape you predict them to be.
