GOAL:
Create a 3-D ceramic letter using the slab technique and embellish the surface using sgraffito, with emphasis on line and pattern
PREPARATION:
1. Decide on a letter, and search for “Capital Letter__” in Google Images. Choose one you like and save it to your desktop. Resize it to roughly 8”x10”, then print. It should fill the page, as this will be your paper template.
2. Cut it out.
3. Trace your letter onto a blank sheet of paper and use the ZENTANGLE handouts to design the surface decoration of your finished ceramic letter.
CONSTRUCTION:
1. Watch the slab technique demo, then roll, cut, and assemble your letter:
Roll a slab that is big enough for your template.
Smooth front and back with a rib tool.
Cut around your template with a needle tool.
2. Cut 1 ½” strips and score and slip them upright around the perimeter of your letter to create walls.
Roll a coil to pencil thickness and smooth it into the seam on the inside of the walls
Cut another letter using your template, then score and slip onto the top of the walls
3. Once your letter is enclosed, smooth out the entire surface and seams.
4. Cut a hole in the back if you want it to hang on the wall, or an air vent if it will be freestanding.
SGRAFFITO:
1. Let your letter dry to at least leather hard. Glaze it with two even coats.
2. Draw your designs on with a pencil
3. Use a scratch tool to carve your design. Use a variety of patterns and line thickness
