If direct pressure isn't working or the limb is amputated, use a manufactured tourniquet (found in many UK public Bleed Control Kits or "P.Ac.T" kits).
Placement: Place the tourniquet 5–7cm (2–3 inches) above the wound, between the injury and the heart. Never place it over a joint (elbow or knee).
2. Tighten the Strap: Pull the strap as tight as possible and secure it.
Twist the windlass rod until the bright red bleeding stops and the distal pulse (the pulse further down the limb, like at the wrist) is no
longer palpable. This will be painful for the patient.
Lock the windlass rod into the clip to secure it in place. Finally, note the time of application on the tourniquet or the patient's forehead.
This is crucial information for medical professionals.
