Number line - students use a number line tool to identify a "part" and hop up or down the number line. For example: (5 + 2 = ?) Students identify larger number (5) and hop up 2 times. The students will see that their "whole" is 7.
Touch Math - students have learned a multi-sensory strategy for identifying numbers and their value. The students have learned that numbers 1 - 9 have "touch points" (numbers 1 - 5 have individual touch points, numbers 6 - 9 have double/single touch points). The students will circle the greater number and place touch points on the smaller. Students will "count on" or "count back" depending on the operation to solve.
Pictures - students use pictures to count. Students remember to count carefully and "mark off" individual items in a set.
Number Bonds - the students use their body to demonstrate understanding of the "part, part, whole" concept. The students have learned that a "part plus a part equals a whole!" The students must decide if there is a missing part or whole when working with a number bond.
Math Fact Knowledge - the students should always be practicing basic facts at home to build on their math fact fluency!!!
Word Problems and "C.U.P.S." - solving word problems can be tricky! Mathematicians in our class use this acronym to solve. Each letter stands for an action:
C - CIRCLE *Circle any "math numbers" or "words"
U - UNDERLINE *Underline the whole question
P - PLAN *Find the key word or words which tell you which operation to use ( + or - )
S - SOLVE *Solve using a strategy. Double check your answer with a different strategy!
Students practice math facts for addition and subtraction daily. Students are assessed by using Bubble Gum Math! This quick assessment lasts for a minute and a half. Students must solve all facts correctly. The students who complete all facts correctly in the allotted time will earn a piece of "bubble gum" for their individual bubble gum jar. The students enjoy racing against the clock to improve their fact fluency knowledge!
*If you would like a copy of Bubble Gum Math sheets, please send a request via email! I am happy to send this home so you can practice with your child regularly.
Please use this subtraction poem at home with your child. This helps us to remember when we need to regroup or not.
