What is a Book Nooker?
A Book Nooker is a highly skilled and trained 4th or 5th grader that is willing to learn the inner workings of the Library / Learning Commons. The role of a Book Nooker is to provide assistance in the Library/Learning Commons and take an active part in giving back to the school community. Book Nookers will be taught a variety of jobs that take place in the Learning Commons. Responsibilities such as book check in and check out, book processing, locating books for classes or special displays, and managing the care and keeping of the Chromebooks and iPads are just a sampling of the positions available. Student volunteer once a month during an indoor recess time.
How to become a Book Nooker?
Once the student expresses interest and completes a job application with teacher recommendation. Individuals will be given a work day of either an odd or even date to report to the Library /Learning Commons. Students will be given on the job training. Once successfully trained, students will be expected to serve in their role. The work periods are on inclement indoor recess days. If the weather has students staying inside, and it is their typical working date (either their assigned even or odd number) then they may report to the Library / Learning Commons in lieu of the indoor recess. If students sign up and skip their work days repeatedly they will need to reapply for the position and go through a second training session. If at anytime the classroom teacher needs the student to stay in the classroom or school work needs to be completed then the work day is excused.
Book Nookers are independent and responsible.
Timeliness is important. All Book Nookers are expected to arrive on time to the Library / Learning Commons and to leave in time for lunch. It will not be Mrs. Velleca’s job to tell the volunteers the time to leave, although they will be given ample reminders. Book Nookers will be asked to remember their assigned dates for working as there will not be a formal work schedule developed. Classmates can help out by reminding each other and working in collaborative partnerships in the Library / Learning Commons.
If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Velleca in the Library / Learning Commons.
