Math Curriculum Update

September- October

Our year will begin by building our sense of numbers with two very large ideas; number concepts to 1000, and patterning.

Throughout the entire year, we will work on our fluency with basic addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts.

Our primary resource for practice and exploration will be through a website called IXL Math. This resource promotes mastery while allowing students to progress at their own pace.

Number Concepts

Numbers can be represented in many ways.

We can use a numeral such as 368.

We can use a number word such as nine hundred twelve.

We can use a place value chart.

We can use base ten blocks.

We can regroup to rename numbers by trading in ten smaller units for one larger unit, or one larger unit for ten smaller units.

(for example, 305 = 2 hundreds, 10 tens and 5 ones)

We can use number lines to represent and compare numbers.

We can use amounts we know to estimate other amounts.

We can skip count by 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 10s, 25s, and 100s.

Patterns

An increasing pattern is a pattern that gets greater each time.

For example, the pattern 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 is an increasing pattern. It starts at 10 and increases by 5 each time.

A decreasing pattern is a pattern that becomes less each time.

For example, the pattern 18, 16, 14, 12, 10… is a decreasing pattern. It starts at 18 and decreases by 2 each time.
