Reading Workshop

The children learn from the mini-lesson and their independent reading time..but during the Share-Time, the students become the teachers! It is amazing to have the students exploring literature- and amazing to see the children's skills and habits growing!

First, we begin our Reading Workshop with a mini-lesson. These lessons include read alouds that focus on a reading strategy...like making connections or questioning...

These mini-lessons give the students a focus. We teach reading skills and strategies that readers use so that the students can try them on their own.

Finally- Share time- the students are encouraged to share something they want to share about their reading from that independent and guided-reading time. The "sharers" come back with their book and information to share.

Take A Little Book Walk With Elizabeth!

A book-walk is when a reader previews the text by looking at each page and comments on the pictures. The book-walk is very helpful in preparing the reader for the text when they actually read it.

Next, the students go off do what readers do best... read. This is a time for the students to have independent practice reading and practicing the skills from the mini-lesson. During this time, I am conferencing with students and pulling small groups to work on strategies, skills, etc.
