There are different ways you can solve missing number problems!
Counting Back Counting Up
35 - _?_ = 18 18 + _?_ = 35
A. 35 - 5 = 30 A. 18 + 2 = 20
B. 30 - 10 = 20 B. 20 + 10 = 30
C. 20 - 2 = 18 C. 30 + 5 = 35
---------------------- -------------------
Now, add up the "jumps".
10 + 5 + 2 = 17 10 + 5 + 2 = 17
? = 17 ? = 17

Or, you can simply subtract.
35 - 18 = ?
10 8 decompose the part...18 into a 10 & 8
subtract 35 - 10 = 25
subtract 25 - 8 = 17
Start at 25, count back 8.
(17 , 18, 19, 20, 21, 22,23, 24, 25 ) When you do this..you reach 17!
Sally still lost 17 pennies.
