Be here. Be on time. Nothing says you are really ready as much as being on time.
Vocabulary. Write the French word on one side and the English word or picture on the other side. Use blue index cards for masculine and pink for feminine (or whatever colors you want).
Practice saying the French while looking at the English. Say the English while looking at the French. Write the French while looking at the English. Use vocabulary flash cards with new verbs. Practice writing the words five times.
Vocabulary- the second time around. You get to do free retakes. Take advantage. Retakes add points to your grade, plus reinforces the material.
Make a date. Clear your schedule. Plan to be available Mondays after school or Tuesdays during Flex to be able to submit work and to do retakes. Do your retakes right away.
What's your agenda? Use your agenda book to record your assignments.
Label everything. Put French signs on objects around the house. Say the word out loud.
Name objects. Name objects as you touch them.
Talk to yourself. Say a French sentence to yourself between every class, or during commercials on TV.
Practice. Practice every day for fifteen minutes.
Don't be late. Hand in all your signatures, assignments, etc on time... You being on time keeps us organized, plus there is no mad scramble at the end for only partial credit.
Pay attention. Really pay attention in class. WATCH! French class is mostly charades and bad acting right now. Watch for gestures, tone, facial expressions to help you with meaning. If you don't know what is going on, or you are lost or confused simply raise your hand and ask Madame to repeat or to reexplain.
Test yourself. Fold lined paper in three columns. Write the French in the first column and the English in the second. Hide the French and try to write it again in the third column while only looking at the English. Self correct. Then hide all but the new French column. Write the English. Continue until you’ve mastered the vocabulary.
Color code. Write masculine vocabulary with a blue pen and feminine vocabulary with a red pen.
Get some rhythm! Make up a rhyme, song, chant, or acronym for remembering verbs, conjugations, or grammar rules. For example: · Sing the conjugation of être to “twinkle, twinkle little star”.· Bags go before- Beauty, Age, Goodness, Size adjectives.
Make connections. Make links to English words or ideas.E.g., la lumière means the light. You could think illuminate or even of the Candle guy Lumière from “Beauty and the Beast”.
Take a picture. Take a picture of tomorrow’s vocabulary words and set it as your screen saver. You can study every time you check the time!
Get cultured. Listen to French music while reading the French lyrics.
Love your accent! Really try to memorize where the accents go.
Collect autographs. Get all tests and quizzes signed. This serves as a little communication between all parties.
Bring your materials to class. You need: 2 sharpened pencils, paper to take notes, your workbook, and textbook.
Plan ahead. See Madame in advance if you know you are going to be absent. She might be able to give you work that you will need. Check the online homework, and call your four reliable French classmates.
Use your phone. If you have a phone use it to set reminders for Duolingo, homework etc... You should have the telephone numbers of four responsible classmates. Set your lockscreen to the day's vocabulary so you can study even when you are checking the time.
Duolingo. Do Duolingo every time you can. Keep your streak! Do even more than you need to. Get the APP on your phone or tablet.
Practice how to Study. Study, study, study some more. Practice, practice, practice some more.
Get everything signed.
Do not procrastinate. Always do your homework right away.
Take notes! If it gets written on the board be sure to write it down.
Be sure to pay attention in class.
Go through your textbook. Review where we've been. See where we're going.
Come after school for help.
Bring your materials to class. Remember to bring your book, workbook, pencils etc...
Make up rhythms and songs to help you remember concepts and lists.
Put that day's vocabulary on your lock-screen so you can see it every time you look at your phone.
Study for your vocab. Study for your vocabulary every night.
Be sure to do your retakes.
Write your vocabulary 5 times each when you are studying. It will help you to remember better.
Quizlet Speller and Learn: These will help you with your vocabulary. Be sure to do a good job on them.
Make as many connections to French vocabulary as you can. E.g., 100% is called per cent because the French word for 100 is CENT.
YOU could also think 100 pennies in a dollar. There are connections everywhere.
Take your time and do a careful job with your journals and homework.
Do your homework right away.
Get organized. It is so much easier to study, do homework, and find thing when you are organized.
Always write down your verb conjugations so you can refer to them.
Keep a template sentence in your head to refer to when it is time for harder sentences.
Fold it. Make fold-able study cards to help with verb conjugation.
Do your Duolingo right away.
Get a second opinion. Double check your work with a friend before turning it in.
Use your resources. Be sure to use your textbook, notes, quizzes etc...
Use your time. Get as much done in class as you can.
Budget your time. Plan a certain amount of time to study.
Use French outside of school as much as you can. Text your friends in French, set your phone to French, practice with your parent.
Find French things to read. Groceries, household products, anything.
Listen to French - French music, French news...
Do everything you can to earn a full note card for the exam.
1. You will have a full note card. 2. You will have learned that much more content along the way.
Talk in class Speak as much French as you can. In class, at home, wherever.
Homework counts. There really is no way around this one. You have to do your homework.
Open book quizzes. Do a good job the first time. If you make a mistake, be sure to do your paragraphs.
Be on time. Try to have your work submitted on time. The more organized you are the better it is for everyone.
STUDY. Study for tests and quizzes, but a better strategy would be to study 20 minutes each even when you don't have a test.
Participate in class Speak as much French as you can, volunteer answers, show us your best charades. It's all good.
Write it down Always record your assignments in your agenda book. You think you'll remember but you won't, so... write it and read it.
We live here too. This room has so much stuff in it to help you. Look around. Absorb.
Read ahead (I say you can.) When you start a new chapter read ahead. Get an idea of what it is all about. Take a look at what concepts we will be studying before we start them in class.
There's a word for that! Make sure you study your vocabulary. Quizlet Learn and Speller are a great help.
Take notes. If Madame writes it down you should write it down.
Time management Work on your assignments a bit each afternoon so that you aren't stuck trying to do it all the night before it is due. This also applies to Duolingo.
French up your social media Set your phone, Facebook etc... to French.
Get some culture. Practice your French by reading, writing listening, speaking in French. Are you writing a letter to a friend? Throw in a French paragraph. Want to listen to some music. Find some French tunes on Youtube, Pandora, Spotify, etc...

Study card. If you earned the right to have a study card for the exam make sure that you make a really good card.
Listen. Listen to Madame when she is talking.
Eewww gross. Don't chew gum in class. It is hard to practice a new language with gum in your mouth.
Textbook. We are lucky enough to have a physical, portable textbook. Make sure you read it well and study the content. E.g., Lectures Culturelles (mini-projects), structures, etc.
Write down your homework. Always. Even if you think you'll remember. If you do forget be sure to check on Madame's website or call one of your responsible French classmates.
Use your phone? Put your vocabulary on your lock screen. Set alarms on your phone to remind you to do your homework.
Do it again. Retake your vocabulary quizzes. It doesn't take long. Better yet, really study for 20 minutes in the first place.
Quizlet. Doing Quizlet is like studying for vocabulary. It can even tell you which words you miss the most.

Make Flashcards. It sounds babyish but it works.
Journals. Whenever you find a cool French fact write it down. You can use it in your next journal.
Signatures. Get everything signed. In the end it makes a big difference.
Be a hoarder. Keep all your work even after it is graded. Hoard everything in your very well organized binder.
Extra credit. Is There is extra credit if you submit your journal earlier than the day it is due. Take advantage.
Extra help / Clarification. As soon as you even think you might not understand something ask for clarification.
Make an appointment. Madame is really willing to help. She has Monday as her After School day. If you can't attend she will find time for you. Ask her when she is available.
Surf the web. Use Madame's website. There are also so many other sites that can help you with whichever concept you need. Tell Madame if you find a great website, she'll probably give you extra credit.
Make note cards for verbs. Use note cards to study all of your verb tenses - you'll want to memorize all of them.
Keep everything. Keep your French 1 Need to Know paper. It is very handy even after French 1.
Journals Make sure you use lots of vocabulary in your journals. It will really help you to absorb your vocabulary words. Writing in your journal will help you to formulate ideas.
Quizlet. Quizlet is great for helping you to remember your vocabulary.
Extra credit. There is a spot on the website for missing documents. If you can think of a document which should be uploaded or scanned tell Madame in order to receive extra credit.
Repetition and persistence. Practice makes perfect!

Travel. Take every chance you get to go where you can practice your French.
Time management. Write down all your work which is due. (Here is the part they never tell you: Plan when you will do each assignment.)
Take notes. Basically, if Madame writes it down, you should write it down.
Keep calm and Français on. Stay calm and relax. It is easier to study when you aren't stressed.
Duolingo. Do Duolingo for 20 minutes each night.
Study. Study French every night even if there is not a test. Study verb tenses.
Learn another language - especially a romance language. There are so many cognates and connections to be made. The more you know the easier it is to learn even more.
Ask questions. As soon as you are unsure of something - ask! This will improve you knowledge and level of your work. It will also prevent you from getting bogged down in confusion.
Help a friend. When you help someone with French you are actually reinforcing the concepts and skills for yourself at the same time.
Listen in class. Just listening in class will help you with your accent when you speak as well as give you more vocabulary which isn't in the book!
Cell Phone. Put your vocabulary list on your lockscreen.
Understand? Really understand the work that you are doing and why it is what is is.
Read. Read everything: your text, the structure, the cultural readings, environmental reading, surfing the web in French reading.
