Today's Goal: Today students will be able to represent numbers using exponents.
Base: the number used as a factor in a power
Exponent: The number of times a factor is used in a power.
Power: Numbers expressed using exponents
Perfect Squares: Squares of whole numbers
Perfect Cubes: Numbers with three identical whole number factors.
That is, the base is 6 since this is the factor being mukltiplied and the exponent is 4 since that is the number of times the factor is to be multiplied. This NEVER means 6 X 4. It is 6 X 6 X 6 X 6. Evaluated this is 1,296.
Let's say you are asked to evaluate the power to the left, three to the fourth power. Remember three to the fourth power means I need four copies of three combined using multiplication, that is 3 X 3 X 3 X 3.
3 X 3 = 9
9 X 3 = 27
27 X 3 = 81
The same process applies if the base is a decimal or fraction.
3.2 X 3.2 X 3.2
3.2 X 3.2 = 10.24
10.24 X 3.2 = 32.768
