Today's Goal: Today students will be able to multiply integers (positive and negative whole numbers).
Again, to solve one step equations get the variable to be all alone. In the example below the a is the variable.
Music Video
Example:
12a = 72
We see that the a is being multiplied by 12.
Use the opposite of multiplication, which is division, to remove the • 12 and isolate the variable. 12 ÷ 12 = 1. Remember, whatever you do to one side of the equals sign you must do the same things to the other side of the sign.
12a ÷ 12 = 72 ÷ 12
a = 6
Check your answer:
12(6) = 72
72 = 72 is true so our answer in correct.
Additional Information for future equations invovling multiplying negative numbers.
Multiplying integers is all about the sign. Multiply the numbers together then look at the signs. If the signs are the same (both positive or both negative) the answer (product) is positive. If the signs are different (one positive and one negative) the answer (product) is negative.
