Today's Goal: Today students will be able to add positive and negative numbers. They will also be able to demonstrate the math that is happening by using a number line.
Adding a Postive and Negative Integer.
Remember to use counters to do the problems if you are not sure.
Adding Positive & Negative Numbers
Practice Sites
Race Car Math - Add integers when you hit things on the track.
Circus Math - Put the problems in the right cage. Decide if the sum is positive, negative or zero.
To solve one step equation we use the opposite operation to get the variable to be alone. Here is an example:
4 + x = 12
In this example x is the variable. We need to get x to be alone. To do this we have to get rid of the 4. It is a positive 4 so the opposite operation is subtraction. We do 4 - 4 = 0 to get rid of the 4 on the left side of the equation.
4 - 4 + x = 12 is the same as 0 + x = 12 which is the same as x = 12.
x = 12
Then we remember that whatever we do to one side of the equation we have to do the same thing to the other side. We subtracted 4 from the left side so we have to subtract 4 from the right side.
x = 12 - 4
x = 8.
We now have x alone and believe it has a value of 8 to make the equation true. To be sure we put the value of x back intot he equation to see if it is true.
4 + 8 = 12
This is true so our answer is x = 8.
