PLANNER/PHONE: Every year emphasis is placed on organization, which cannot be accomplished without using a planner or putting assignments in your phone. Here are some of my other organization recommendations.
ORGANIZATIONAL/STUDY SUPPLIES:
Method 1: Binder
• 1" to 1 1/2" Binder
• Six 2-pocket insertable plastic dividers (one per class)
• Loose leaf paper
• Weekly/monthly calendar (optional)
Method 2: Folders and spiral notebooks
• Six different colored pocket folders (plastic ones will last the entire school year. Label left side homework and right side completed.
• Six different colored 1-subject spiral notebooks to match folders (i.e., yellow folder and yellow notebook for math, red folder and red notebook for English, etc.)
This method is not as organized and you run out of space very quickly.
Home File System - needed for both methods
You run out of space in your folders or binder pretty quickly, so have a place at home to file your papers until after finals!
• Desktop hanging file holder OR accordion file
• Hanging file folders with labels
• File folders (optional)
Study Supplies: Keep these supplies handy at home and in your backpack.
• Pencil case in your backpack or binder with extra pencils and pens
• 3x5 index cards
• Highlighters (multiple colors)
• Physics calculator: Texas Instruments TI-30 Scientific Calculator - $10.99 at Target and Office Max - This is a must! Be sure to put your name on it.
• Graph paper
• Colored markers and/or pencils
KEEP ORGANIZED:
Every day:
1. Always write assignments in your planner or in your phone!
2. Put the date on all papers you get in class as soon as you get them and keep them in chronological order (date order) in your notebook.
3. Put papers you get in class in the pocket of your divider at the end of class.
4. At the end of each day or in ref/study class punch holes in your papers and put them in your binder, by subject, in chronologic order (newest in back).
5. Now you have all your papers in order when it's time to study for a test.
As needed after each test:
1. After each test, take all your papers, including your study guide and test if they are given back to you, and put it in a file folder you keep at home. Keep all units by class in a hanging file folder holder or accordion file.
2. Now you are ready for finals - all of your units are in order by class ready for you to start studying!
Here is an example of a hanging file holder to put your papers when your binder gets too full.
These are the best dividers for your binder because they have pockets and are made of plastic
This calculator is a must! Be sure to put your name on it!
Be sure to get a pencil pouch to hold extra pencils, highlighters, even your calculator!
Watch this video to show you how to set up your binder and your home filing system. I no longer require the weekly planner or monthly planner, but it's a good idea if your child has problems with long-term planning or keeping track of appointments.
