Te reo Maori at Pt England School

Thirty percent of the children at Pt England are Maori and the rest are Polynesian except for approximately 40 students of other ethnicities.

In order to satisfy the needs of our Maori Community and the expectations of the Treaty of Waitangi we have settled on an approach that has worked successfully for nearly 10 years.

A Kaiako is employed by the school on a part time basis and teaches each class for 30 minutes per week covering the objectives of the Curriculum and the local needs. The teachers are required to stay in the room and assist with classroom management and learn with the children. The contexts for learning usually come from the School wide Thematic Units and the content covers both te reo.

Classroom teachers reinforce the weekly specialist lessons by integration into the routines and culture of the classroom.

The Kaiako coaches the School Pounamu Maori Culture groups (senior and junior). These group starts in term 2 because term 1 has camp and swimming.

Janine Tito is responsible for the programmes in the school and supervises and supports Safron Witika the Kaiako who is teaching the Year 1 - 6 students. Janine teaches the Year 7&8 students and has recorded all the relevant information on her site. The Programme uses the Integrated Inquiry as a context while teaching te reo, Ti kanga, Kapa Haka, myths and legends.

The Senior School study The Treaty of Waitangi and use the Principles of Protection, Participation and Partnership to discuss their roles and responsibilities and rights. The school Values system reinforces the Principles. This is a safe, equal opportunity school.

All students have lessons that follow a general plan for each level.

The Maori community is consulted annually. Home School Partnership meetings are held twice a term and each ethnic group meets to discuss set topics. The Maori group has opportunities at these meetings for full participation in discussions and plans for the school.

Pt England School strongly believes in the three Principles of the Treaty and is fully committed to ensuring equity for all children no matter what ethnic group they identify with. However we always acknowledge the Tangata Whenua.
