Hundertwasser was born in Austria in 1928. Hundertwasser is best known for his use of bright, dark colors and organic lines, including spiral shapes. He believed everyone had a “window right” meaning that could design and decorate the area around their windows. Hundertwasser lived in New Zealand from 1975 until he died in 2000. Some of his famous buildings include:

Hundertwasserhaus in Vienna, Austria

This was built between 1983 and 1985. It features uneven floors, a roof covered with earth and grass, and large trees growing from inside the rooms. Hundertwasser took no payment for the design of the house, saying that it was worth it, to prevent something ugly from going up in its place.

This is the only Hundertwasser design in the Southern Hemisphere. It is built with wavy lines and ceramic tiles. The building also features small sculptures, coloured glass and a live tree. Recycled materials such as glass bottles were used to complete the building. Plants grow on the roof of the toilets.
