Student Publications and Projects

PDS students are encouraged to develop their voices in multiple mediums, whether through the arts, engagement in their wider communities or through intellectual pursuits in all disciplines. Below are examples of students writing - poetry, analytical and critical pieces, creative writing, as well other expressions of student ideas and pursuits

Student Writing and Publications

  • In 2018 our students were recognized by the Storm King Poetry contest. Samuel H. (2019) and Aaron S. (2019) won recognition for their poems: Sam's poem is titled "The Schooling of Love" and Aaron's poem is titled "There's this feeling."
  • Ben S (2017) was one of ten students region-wide recognized in April 2017 in the Storm King Poetry Contest. His poem, "About Music" was further recognized as one of three outstanding poems. He is also due to be published in a poetry anthology called "Live Poet's Society" under the heading "Our World." The poem that will appear in that anthology is "Meditation on the Orchid."

  • Ava F. (2019) was published in the January 2016 Chronogram. To read her poem "She" see page 65 of that publication or find it here. She was also honored for this poem in the 2017 Storm King Poetry Contest.
  • December 2015 Issue of Lit Mag: It's Still A Spooky Time of Year
  • Elijah S. and Angela A., both seniors in 2014-15 with many poems to their credit won awards for their poetry submissions to the 2014 Hudson to Housatonic (H2H) of the Scholastic Writing Awards Competition. Elijah's poem "Rubbing stingers off hornets," won a Silver Key award at the national competition. He traveled to Manhattanville College in March 2015 to take part in a ceremony honoring his work.
  • Elijah S (2015) had a poem accepted to Gold Dust: http://www.golddustmagazine.co.uk. A direct link will be added when the poem is "live."
  • Faculty/Student paper accepted to the peer-reviewed journal, Bioinvasion Records. Students Ellie S. (2016), Julia R. (2015) and Mollie D-C (2014) contributed extensively to the field sampling, data analysis and writing of a paper with faculty member, Brent Boscarino. The paper, accepted represents the culmination of the work on aquatic invasive species begun several summers prior. This paper underwent two official rounds of peer-review and countless drafts to arrive at this point. Usama H. (while not a coauthor) was a big contributor to this project as well.

  • Elizabeth E. ('16) wrote an English piece in her 9th grade year that was published in the April 5, 2014 Teen Verge section of the Poughkeepsie Journal. See that piece here.
  • Poets Angela A. '15 and Elijah S. '15 contributed these prize-winning poems to our site. Angela won a Gold Key award for her five submissions and Elijah a Silver Key award for his submission to the 2013 Hudson to Housatonic (H2H) of the Scholastic Writing Awards Competition.

Presentations

Presentations posted here are primarily those delivered in high school assemblies.

  • Samuel H. presented the results of his independent anthropology research in a June 2018 assembly to the high school.
  • The PDS FIRST Tech Challenge team of 2016-17 won first place in the local tournament at Red Hook High School, beating 17 other teams. The team presented on their robot building and competition experience, highlighting the collaborative and problem-solving nature of the work.
  • Sonya P., Lola T., Micaela W. and Sobia H. (all class of 2020) presented to a high school assembly on a science class research topic: Climate Change. Great responses and discussion followed.
  • Charlie B (2017) presented to a high school assembly on his involvement with a Russian/Asian Cultural video production highlighting the population in Brighton Beach. He is featured in the video - the trailer is here.
  • Charlie B. (2017) presented on his Visions Service Adventures trip to Myanmar in summer 2015. See an abbreviated presentation here.

  • The community service group presented about the work that they did in the fall of 2014
  • In September 2014 Charlie B-B presented to a high school assembly. The topic was his experience in the Visions program over the summer. Charlie did community service in Alaska and he shared his observations of the people and culture. See his presentation here
  • In April 2014, members of the invasive species research club, advised by faculty researcher Brent Boscarino, presented their work to the Mohawk River Basin Program to pursue funding for their research. See that presentation here.
  • In January 2014, the the first PDS First Tech Challenge team gave a presentation about their intensive study experience and the robotics competition on January 25th.
  • In December 2013, the student environmental club "Water is Life" gave an informative presentation about water purification.
  • Peng S. provided a presentation in fall 2013 to inform the upper school about the United Nations "Nothing but Nets" malaria prevention campaign.
