Summer is a great time to get involved with programs targeted towards your interests. There are hundreds of summer programs in various areas here are a few locally.

University of Maryland

The Physics Frontier Center at Joint Quantum Institute Summer Girls, an intensive, hands-on program that brings rising 11th-grade girls to the University of Maryland's Department of Physics for two weeks of instruction, exploration and experiment.

Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering

The ESTEEM Research Mentoring Program offers opportunities in research to high school students who are considering careers in engineering. The program provides students who are interested in pursuing engineering as a major in college with the chance to learn more about research in engineering disciplines. These students will conduct an independent research project under the direction of an engineering faculty member.

Pre-College Programs: SAT Strategies This program is open to all rising 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students. The focus of this workshop will be on successful test-taking skills and reasoning strategies to help students maximize their scores on the SAT. Topics will be presented relevant to the math, verbal and new writing sections of the test. The program provides over 40 hours of instruction, a pre-test and a post-test as well as periodic evaluations to gauge student progress throughout the workshop.

Project Pipeline is a pre-college program that prepares and recruits talented students to attend the Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park. Students will take an SAT Strategies class for ½ a day, Mon.-Thurs., and during the other half of the day students will take workshops designed to improve their mathematics skills and work on engineering projects. On Friday, students will participate in additional hands-on engineering and mathematics workshops and enjoy a free lunch with special guest speakers! The program is open to rising 10th, 11th and 12th grade students who have already taken Algebra 1 and Geometry and who will be taking Algebra 2/Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus or Calculus in fall 2012.

Students with Potential and Interest, Considering Engineering - S.P.I.C.E. Camp S.P.I.C.E. Camp is a one-week commuter program for young women who will be entering the 9th and 10th grade next fall and would like to learn more about engineering. Students will be introduced to the world of engineering through projects, tours, and guest speakers. Each activity is intended to highlight the relevance of engineering in our daily life and how engineering can work to improve societal problems. All activities will be supervised by current engineering students and conducted in a safe learning environment at the Unversity of Maryland, College Park.

Cyber Camp Students learn about the field of cybersecurity and skills needed for this profession. Topics covered include operating systems, system administration, networking, programming, cyber defense exercises, and more.

Discovering Engineering The Discovering Engineering program is an engineering summer camp for high school students (upcoming juniors and seniors). Find out if engineering is for you. Meet faculty, tour one-of-a-kind labs and facilities, and learn about the various engineering disciplines offered at the University of Maryland. You will live on campus and participate in a variety of activities including laboratory work and demonstrations, lectures, discussions, computer instruction and team design projects.

Get a jump start by joining Suited 4 Success summer boot-camp where you will gain an introductory group experience over (4) sessions as we prepare for the college admissions process. Students will research and compile a list of potential colleges, create an academic resume and recommendation letters, work on essay writing, college applications and SAT/ACT strategies and techniques.

Culture Keepers Program

Prince George's African American Museum

and Cultural Center

Summer tours, fine arts and professional development workshops, exposing high school students participants to museum administration and African American history, art and culture. Students will produce art work and presentations that reflect museum administration and African American history, art and culture.

Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation Xtreme Teens Programs and Activities

Xtreme Teens provides programs, classes, facilities and other fun things to do for teens ages 13-17 and pre-teens 10-12. Xtreme Teens offers programs, events and activities at community centers, sports facilities, art centers, historical sites, nature centers and parks throughout Prince George’s County. You might not think about it much, but the little things you do now can have a big effect on your future. By taking part in Xtreme Teens activities like on-the-job training, summer employment, service learning and opportunities to learn about college, you can have fun and get prepared for your future, too!

At the Well Young Women's Leadership Academy

at Princeton University

The At the Well Young Women’s Leadership Academy was developed out of a strong commitment to help young women overcome obstacles to becoming successful leaders. The Leadership Academy is geared towards minority girls in under-served communities entering the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade.

Participants are selected on a competitive basis through an evaluation of the student’s academic achievement, recommendation letter(s), extracurricular activities, leadership qualities, essay, completed application, and an interview. A GPA of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0 is required.

USDA APHIS VS Ag-Discovery Summer Programs.

Deadline March 31

Ag-Discovery, a 2-3 week summer camp for middle school and high school students, is a great opportunity for youth with an interest in Agriculture/Veterinary medicine and other agriculture-related fields. There are 17 venues, all land-grant colleges or universities, across the US that will host camps this summer. Each venue has a unique focus. Virginia’s own Virginia State University is hosting an Ag-Discovery camp this year for the first time!

All Ag-Discovery camps are FREE, parents just have to get the child there and pick them up! Students can apply to however many as they wish even if there is an Ag-Discovery program in their state.

PRATT Institute Pre-College Summer Programs

Every summer, Pratt sponsors a college-level program for high school sophomores, juniors and seniors at its Brooklyn and Manhattan campuses. The program attracts about 400 students. It is an intensive immersion experience in art , design or architecture.

The summer program regularly attracts national and international students. Students choose an elective course such as fine arts/painting & drawing, graphic design, illustration (traditional or digital), fashion design (Brooklyn only), photography, architecture and creative writing. Students develop their creative skills, build an effective portfolio for college admission, and earn four college credits. Scholarships are available based on merit.
