Distance Learning

PGCPS to Open with Distance Learning this Fall

CEO Dr. Monica Goldson announced her plan to safely and responsibly reopen Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS) for the 2020-21 academic year. Following broad input from families, employees and community members, PGCPS will continue distance learning through January 2021. Prince George’s County has been the epicenter of the COVID-19 public health crisis in Maryland. In light of the health disparities in communities that house more than 136,500 students and 20,000 employees, there is a significant public health concern if schools were to reopen this fall for in-person instruction.

Core Classes

• Each week, teachers will teach one virtual lesson per content, per prep (pre-recorded or live) with two assignments related to that lesson. Lessons should be no longer than 30-45 minutes. The recorded videos should be posted in Google Classroom for students to review independently.

• It is recommended that all lessons be taught between the hours of 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. This timeframe would also include an opportunity for virtual office hours (for students needing additional assistance) and instructional planning. Additionally, will be monitoring and responding to email throughout the day.

• Educational Online Teachers (EOP) should designate a minimum of 45 minutes as response time to support students requiring assistance.

All core content assignments are due two days after the lesson is taught.

• For co-taught classrooms, the core content teacher will add the ESOL and/or Special Education teacher to the Google Classroom as a co-teacher. Special education and ESOL teachers will co-plan and co-teach with general education teachers.

Electives Courses:

• Each Elective teacher will post assignments each Friday.

• It is recommended that lessons be posted between the hours of 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. This timeframe would also include an opportunity for virtual office hours (for students needing additional assistance) and instructional planning. Additionally, staff should be monitoring and responding to email throughout the day.

All Elective assignments are due one week after the assignment is posted.

• Electives include content courses outside core content, Art, Physical Education, World Languages, Music and Health, etc.
