Here is a 4 year plan to guide you in steps to being college ready.

SAT PREP

Northwestern High Schools offers an SAT PREP courses in Math and Verbal skills. Students should take advantage of the courses in their sophomore and junior year. SAT PREP is also available online.

    • KhanAcademy.org - FREE online SAT prep aligned with Collegeboard. Input your SAT score and it will design a customized SAT prep course for you.

    • Number2.com SAT and ACT prep

The LIFT SAT PREP Courses at University of Maryland

The SAT Preparation 6-week Course provides students with the knowledge and strategies necessary for success on the SAT. The course is offered on Saturdays, 9am – 12:30pm, four times during the academic year and coincides with the official administration of the SAT.

Registration Cost: $349

Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis. For best consideration, please submit registration form at least two weeks prior to the start of the course.

Pre-College Programs reserves the right to cancel any session if minimum number of registered students is not met. In the case of cancellation, refunds will be granted.

THE COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAMS

The SAT and ACT are the two college entrance exams required for four year colleges and universities. Seniors should have a test score to submit with their college applications. Students should take their first exams in the spring of their junior year. If students did not take the exam in their junior year, then they should take the exams as early as possible in their senior year. COLLEGEBOARD SAT Test

The official website to register for the college entrance exam. Students and parents can read information on the PSAT, SAT, complete a college search and research scholarships. www.collegeboard.org

ACT Test

The official website to register for the college entrance exam. This test differs from the SAT by testing the students knowledge in English, Mathematics, Reading and Science and includes a Writing portion as well. Students and Parents can find prep material on the website. www.actstudent.org

COLLEGE PREP PROGRAMS

There are several college prep programs to assist student and parents. Below are some that work with Northwestern High School students. Parents and students should contact the individual programs for enrollment.

College and Career Pathways, Inc. (CCP), is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization that offers school-site and community-based college access and career exploration services to elementary, middle, and high school students throughout Prince George’s County and the greater DC Metro area.They strive to ensure that each student they reach graduates from high school with a plan for achieving their educational and career goals. University of Maryland Upward Bound Program

The Upward Bound Program provides academic and career counseling to students toward the goals of admission to and graduation from four-year post-secondary institutions. The Upward Bound Program supplements its participants’ secondary school experiences by creating opportunities for students to gain self-esteem by enhancing their academic and social skills. Northwestern High School students can see Ms. Lynn Truong in the Career Center for program information on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The Upward Bound Program consists of two components:

The six-week summer session provides students opportunities to live in University of Maryland residence halls and attend academic classes in the areas of mathematics, science, composition, reading, foreign languages and study skills.

The academic year sessions provide students further academic instruction, tutoring and counseling as a follow-up to summer activities. Additional services are also available during this time.

The Upward Bound Program is open to students who are entering grades 9 or currently in grade 9, have academic need, and desire to attend college.

Minority Access, Inc.

Educational Talent Search Program

The Talent Search program identifies and assists individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds who have the potential to succeed in higher education. The program provides academic, career, and financial counseling to its participants and encourages them to graduate from high school and continue on to and complete their postsecondary education. The program publicizes the availability of financial aid and assist participant with the postsecondary application process. Talent Search also encourages persons who have not completed education programs at the secondary or postsecondary level to enter or reenter and complete postsecondary education. The goal of Talent Search is to increase the number of youth from disadvantaged backgrounds who complete high school and enroll in and complete their postsecondary education.

The Common Application

WHAT IS THE COMMON APPLICATION?

The Common Application is a not-for-profit organization that serves students and member institutions by providing an admission application – online and in print – that students may submit to any of our 456 members.

WHY USE IT?

Once completed online or in print, copies of the Application for Undergraduate Admission can be sent to any number of participating colleges. The same is true of the School Report, Optional Report, Midyear Report, Final Report and Teacher Evaluation forms. This allows you to spend less time on the busywork of applying for admission, and more time on what's really important: college research, visits, essay writing, and senior year coursework.

EDU, Inc. Common Black College Application

It takes only ten minutes to complete the EDU, Inc. Application and have it submitted to 36 HBCUs at the same time for only $35.

EDU, Inc. is the only company that offers a common application for black colleges. Please refer your friends to the eduinconline website.

The use of the EDU, Inc. Application allows you to receive acceptance letters, financial aid packages and scholarship offers from several different HBCUs.
