Extra Credit Assignment #1
CREATE ART IN THE STYLE OF FAMOUS ARTIST PAUL KLEE
Paul Klee was a Swiss-born artist. His highly individual style was influenced by movements in art that included Cubism, and Surrealism. He was born in 1879 and died in 1940 in Switzerland.
He's known for painting, drawing, watercolors, and printmaking. Cubism uses simple geometric shapes and lines to create a picture. Surrealism is when you draw something that has some recognizable parts but the rest is like a dream, a made up fantasy picture that doesn't have to make sense.
Paul Klee's favorite colors to use were Violet and Yellow. Violet and yellow are complementary colors, that means they are opposites of each other and can be found on opposite sides of the color wheel. Klee argued that these two colors were the most important and the most opposite of all colors.
One of Paul Klee's most famous paintings is called "Arrival of the Bridegroom" from 1933. He draws a cubist-surrealist man using red, purple, blue and green. Notice he used geometric shapes (like the kind you find in your math text books) and free-form/organic shapes (those are shapes you draw free hand or that happen in nature). For extra credit try making a picture of a figure inspired by his style. If you need help here is a visual tutorial to help you create the lines and shapes, step by step.
When you're done your picture will look something like this. If you are able to use color try to use a bold selection of bright colors. Be sure to color neatly and evenly and stay in the lines. Even though these figures in cubism and surrealism might look easy they are never sloppy and never scribbles. Every line is well thought out and planned. Every shape is deliberate. Every color is chosen by the artist with purpose. These are all things that you can do in your picture! If you finish try taking a photo of your art and submitting it on Dojo or Google Classroom. You can also draw this digitally if you want. On the top of this page is a link with "Chrome Book Art Apps" that I compiled with tons of programs you can use to draw online.
Remember, you don't have to like art for it to be good. Paul Klee doesn't have to be your favorite artist, but it's good for us to try different styles of art and learn about different important people in history and in art history. He was the first person to make art like this and that makes him important and influential! Try it out and see how you do.
Good luck and stay safe everybody!
Extra Credit Assignment #2
April is World Autism Awareness Month. That means during the month of April we try to recognize and draw awareness to Autism. Autism is a developmental disorder of the brain that effects how a person interacts with the world. People with autism are not "dumb" or "stupid", they're just different. It's important that we draw awareness to this disorder because people that have Autism are often bullied and treated unfairly. There is a lot more information on Autism Awareness online and I encourage you to read more bout it to understand better.
The extra credit assignment can be done any month, not just April. So if you are reading this after the month has ended you may still make this extra credit art assignment.
The assignment is to watch the following video clip, and then design a poster for Autism Awareness. Your poster must have the following items: 1) A graphic or picture with something nice to look at and represent your idea 2) You must use color. One of the symbols for autism awareness is rainbow colored puzzle pieces (NOT RAINBOWS, but puzzles) and blue light bulbs. The colors are very important for this cause. 3) You must have a positive phrase or slogan that says something about your image and autism awareness. You can google search for thins to write like "April is Autism Awareness Month", or "April 2nd is World Autistm Day" or "Shine a Blue Light on Autism Awareness", etc.
Here is a link to a printable puzzle piece if you have a printer an would like to print it out. If you make a lot of them you can cut them out and put them together to create a giant puzzle!
When you are finished with your poster (which can be made on any size paper. Normal printer or notebook paper is fine) Please take a picture and show me. I hope you hang it in your window to show your support!
