TERM 2:
Our Environment -
CLIMATE CHANGE
"It's getting HOT in here!"
New Zealand National Curriculum -
ACHIEVEMENT OBJECTIVES:
Students will gain knowledge, skills and experience to:
* Understand how human activities (such as the emission of greenhouse gases) are contributing to climate change and global warming.
* Understand how significant and worrying changes predicted due to global warming.
* Understand that events have causes and effects.
* Understand the range of actions that can be taken by governments, businesses and individuals to help reduce the future impact of
climate change.
Introduction
What is Climate Change? What are its causes and impacts around the World? How can we overcome such issue? In this unit you will be introduced to and learn about what Climate Change is, its causes and its impacts globally and most importantly, some of the measures taken by most countries to solve such issue
Class Discussion
In small groups/pairs:
Brainstorm what you already know
Discuss/share your ideas with class
Also consider these questions:
- What is global warming?
- What is climate change?
- What are the causes and effects of such environmental concerns?
Introduction:
Here is a brief introduction to Climate Change. You will be introduced to impacts caused by GW and CC.
What is Climate Change?
An Uncertain Future...
Have a look and discuss the slides on the left which explains the factors that control world climate.
Note: Open with Google Slides which will make it easier for presentation
Watch & Learn
Here are some video clips which explains what climate change is, its causes and effects. This will give you an understanding to answer the questions in activities below.
Numbering Boxes and Summarizing Information...
In this activity, students will have to number the boxes that they think is the best order as well as summarizing information, a significant skill in Social Science.
Impacts of Climate Change globally
Climate Change: Global Impact
The slides on the left will give the students the skill to outline the impacts, identify the positive and negative effects as well as discussing them. The information also explains Climate Change impacts on different areas of the world
Note: Blue arrows in the slides are video clips
Watch & Learn
Watch the following video clips to help you answer the questions on our activities
Activity 1
IPCC Report 2013
Discuss this report from IPCC (Inter Governmental Panel on Climate Change) to complete the Puzzle. The report provides the information to prove that Climate change is real and it is happening around the World
Activity 2
Before the Flood
In Before the Flood (2016), Leonardo DiCaprio and his team travel across the globe to witness firsthand the devastating effects of climate change. This document identifies impacts of such climatic changes to areas around the World.
Activity 3
Likely Impacts of Climate Change
Read the document below to understand more about some of the likely impacts of Climate Change. Use this information to create a STAR diagram
Impacts of Climate Change in Aotearoa New Zealand
Biodiversity Tasks
Use the information on the slides to complete Task 1 and 2 on this Worksheet
Activity
Possible future outcomes for Auckland. This activity will help guide and explain the students to some of the predictions on what will happen in the future in Auckland if we are still experiencing the higher rate of emissions and greenhouse gases produced by every country
Impacts in the Pacific
Impacts in some Pacific island states
The slides generally mention what is happening in the Pacific. The Pacific is the most vulnerable place in the World as they badly affected by Climate Change. It also notes the reasons why some islands may sink due to sea level rise.
Activity
Read the document on the left to finish the sentences on the right task sheet
Is Climate Change Real or a Hoax?
Discussion on the data analysis provided for impacts of Climate Change around the World, including physical evidence of states affected, and how each human causes links together.
