Grade 7 – Measurement (Surface Area and Volume)
By the end of this unit, I will be able to;
· Sketch different prisms that share the same volume
· Solve problems that require conversion of units
· Calculate the volume of right prisms (rectangular prism and triangular prism)
· Calculate the surface area of right prisms
Important points to note:
· There are a few different ways to calculate (and show your work) the area of a prism. 11.1 in the textbook shows one way (using a net, or breaking the shape into pieces).
· You can also calculate the surface area of a right prism by using a formula.
· The textbook only contains surface area and volume of rectangular prisms
Formulas to remember:
Rectangular prism
SA = 2Lw + 2Lh + 2wh
Triangular prism
SA = bh + (s+s+s)xH (where H stands for the height of the entire prism…how far the two triangles are away from each other).
Any prism MAGIC FORMULA
SA = 2B + hp
Surface area of the base + height of the prism times the perimeter
