Population Density

LESSON #1 : Population Density

Read the Notes on this page then complete the worksheets about

Canada's Population Density. You will find it in your Google Drive. You can complete the worksheet in Google Docs.

Population density is a hypothetical way of trying to figure out if a country or region is crowded (densely populated) or not (moderate or sparse).

Canada land area is 9 998 000 square kilometers. That means that we could hypothetically put 9 998 000 squares that are each exactly 1km squared. Each side of the square would be 1km long.

When we consider our population at 37 million, we could, hypothetically speaking, divide our land area by our population and put 3.3 people in each of those 9 998 000 squares! But, we never would. 99% of our population lives in the 10 provinces, 62% of Canada's population live in Ontario and Quebec and 98% of us live within 200km of the US border. S0 population density can help understand some aspects of a countries population, but is it not the whole story.

Some countries in the world have a smaller land area than the city of Ottawa. The the CITY of Ottawa is larger in size than a country! The City of Ottawa is 2 700 km2.. The country of Monaco in Northern Africa is only 2 km2.!
