1. Population Patterns

LESSON #1: Historic Settlement Patterns.

Starting in the late 15th century, French and British expeditions explored, colonized, and fought over various places within North America in what constitutes present-day Canada. The colony of New France (France ruled that part) was claimed in 1534 with permanent settlements beginning in 1608. France ceded (gave up) nearly all its North American possessions to the United Kingdom (The British) in 1763 after the French defeat in the Seven Years' War. The now British Province of Quebec (remember, Canada was not a country yet) was divided into Upper and Lower Canada in 1791 and reunified in 1841. In 1867, the Province of Canada was joined with two other British colonies of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia through Confederation, forming a self-governing entity named Canada. The new country expanded by incorporating other parts of British North America, finishing with Newfoundland and Labrador in 1949.

As exploration continued, more parts of Canada became populated. As more people came to Canada from many parts of Europe, our population grew. As such, some small towns and villages began to grow into fairly large cities that we still know today. We did not just pick places on a map in those days. Settlement followed certain patterns. Think of patterns as "reasons" why certain things happen. In this case, we will explore why cities were established when and where they are.

TASK #1- Why There and Why Then?

1. Print MAP and use it to complete the task worksheets.

Warning- You will need to add a river or two to your map beside some of the cities.

*** if you DO NOT HAVE A PRINTER, use an old map i gave and trace/copy it on another piece of paper.

2. The worksheets have been shared to your Google drive class folder (TEH-CGC..... )

Open the worksheet 1. Settlement Patterns....

Use the worksheet to fill in your map.

3. Answer the questions on the second page of the worksheet about the settlement patterns you see on your map.

4. Take a picture of your completed map and save it to your Gdrive folder so i can see it!

If you have issues with google drive, the files are also here
