The novel opens with the discovery of Anu Krishnan’s body in the Dharma family’s backyard. Anu was living with the family trying to start a writing career. Her arrival upsets the careful balance that had existed: husband Vikram is possessive and angry, wife Suman is quiet and timid, and step-daughter Varsha is suspicious of her step mother’s relationship with Anu. These suspicions leads to cracks in the family and eventually to death.
