In this section, you’ll learn how to take your designs and bring them into the real world using Photoshop mock-ups. A mock-up is a way to apply your artwork—like a logo, poster, or packaging design—onto a product photo so it looks like it actually exists. This is a skill used every day in marketing, branding, and advertising to visualize how a product will look before it’s ever made.
You’ll start by following the tutorials on:
Packaging Design & Mock-ups – Learn how to place designs realistically on products.
Wrapping Logos for Mock-ups – Discover how to make your logo bend, curve, and wrap so it matches the perspective of real surfaces.
Once you’ve practiced these tutorials, you’ll move on to your own creative task. You’ll get to choose a product and brand—either invent one from scratch or redesign an existing one—and create a professional mock-up that could be used in real advertising.
Remember: Save your practice files as you go. The real focus will be on your final creative mock-up task, where you’ll show off your skills in Smart Objects, warping, shadows, and highlights to make your product look polished and realistic.
A mock-up is a realistic preview of how a design will look when applied to a real product. Instead of guessing how a logo, label, or graphic will appear on packaging, clothing, or merchandise, Photoshop lets you create digital prototypes. These help you visualize, test, and present your designs before committing to production.
Smart Objects for Flexibility
Most mock-ups use Smart Objects.
You can double-click on a Smart Object layer, drop in your design, save it, and it will automatically update in the mock-up with correct placement and perspective.
Warping & Distorting Graphics
Use Transform Tools (Warp, Distort, Perspective) to make designs wrap around bottles, boxes, or curved surfaces.
This ensures your artwork looks natural, not just pasted on.
Shadows, Highlights & Reflections
Realistic mock-ups often include light and shadow layers.
By blending your design with these layers (using Multiply, Overlay, or Opacity changes), the design integrates seamlessly with the product photo.
Packaging Layouts
Learn to apply flat packaging designs onto 3D product photos (like bags, cartons, or cans).
Photoshop makes it possible to preview different colourways and design variations quickly.
Logo Placement on Mock-ups
Place logos on mock-ups such as T-shirts, business cards, or signage.
Wrapping tools help simulate fabric folds, material textures, or angled surfaces.
Professional Presentation: Great for portfolios, client work, or pitching ideas.
Experimentation: Try different designs without printing physical prototypes.
Consistency: Ensure your design looks strong across products and media.
Choose a product to create a professional mock-up in Photoshop. You may use your own brand/design (e.g., a personal logo, artwork, or clothing line) OR reimagine an existing brand (e.g., redesign packaging for Nike, Starbucks, or a favourite snack). The goal is to showcase your creativity while demonstrating proper mock-up techniques.
Pick a Product Type
Examples: T-shirt, hoodie, water bottle, phone case, poster, food packaging, shoe box, coffee cup, book cover, etc.
Apply Your Design
Use Smart Objects to place your artwork.
Use Warp/Distort/Perspective tools to make your design fit realistically.
Blend your design using shadows, highlights, and reflections so it looks natural.
Creative Branding
Create your own brand OR refresh an existing one.
Think about colour choices, fonts, and style that best represent the brand.
Final Submission Must Include:
Your final product mock-up (professional-looking, polished).
A small version of the original design/logo/graphic you applied.
A screenshot of your Layers Panel with meaningful layer names (showing Smart Objects, shadows, highlights, etc.).
If you’re not sure where to start, try one of these ideas:
Design packaging for a new energy drink.
Create merchandise for a fictional band or sports team.
Rebrand a classic snack or cereal box.
Design a limited edition hoodie or shoe line.
Create a modern coffee cup or takeaway bag for your favourite café.
Your mock-up should look realistic enough to be used in advertising. This task is all about blending design with photography to sell the idea that your brand/product exists.
