1986

Series racing went well, with the exception of Fast Handicap Race 1, which had to be re-sailed on the Friday morning due to human error in recording the finishing positions. It was amazing that this was the only error, as the leading sailboard was often in danger of lapping the tail-enders for the third time, and yet they were only half an hour behind him. On the Topper course with approx 80 entries they only lost one boat in the week, pretty good going, as at times there were bunches of up to 15 boats crossing the line. The Wayfarer results are subject to an appeal to the RYA but that is part of the game, at least it was a boat to boat incident.

Team managers stood aghast as the teams in the Silly Topper Games threw their Toppers around the course with great excitement and little regard for their condition. Nevertheless, the only damage turned out to be a broken tiller extension and the winning team from Lancashire must have learnt something as they went on to win the treasure Hunt as well.

Having dealt with most domestic problems during the week, as well as recording results on the water, Brigid Hurn compared the prize-giving in her usual inimitable style. Her boss, Chief Education Officer Tim Brighouse coped extremely well and everyone got the correct prize, I think."

"In a summer which has not been renowned for good weather we were blessed with a near perfect week. Sunshine every day, light winds on Monday and Tuesday, gradually building to a force 4 on Friday. The only bad weather, a thunderstorm, managed to coincide nicely with the Team Managers Barbecue at the Sailing Club on Wednesday evening.

Indulge me! The 1986 Regatta was held at Farmoor Reservoir, where I was the Warden of the Oxford & District School Sailing Association. Supported by Thames Water, Oxford Sailing Club and Oxfordshire County Council, the accommodation was at Matthew Arnold School.
