Students in my class are always expected to be working. Working can look like many things. Students might be writing, reading, solving problems, discussing solutions with a partner, playing an educational game, or just thinking ... but we should ALWAYS be working! Just ask your child about our classroom expectations ... they should say, "We need to always be working on something!" :)
... Isn't that what everyone has always told us? In my class we learn to understand that when we make a mistake, we are actually learning. It's okay to give the wrong answer. Our classroom is a family, and we work together to help everyone understand. There are lots of misconceptions about solving math problems, yet wrong answers help us figure out those misconceptions. These same mistakes help us figure out how to solve problems correctly. Through wrong answers students get to show off all the different ways to solve a problem. We all think a little differently, and there can be more than one way to solve a problem!
