Parents,
I know that the "new" way of teaching math can be frustrating for you as you try to help your child. This is a place to find Helpful Hints about the math concepts we learn each week. You will find 3rd grade math vocabulary and definitions, as well as instructions on how to help your child solve their math problems.
What the "New" math is really trying to do, is create life long mathematicians, who can problem solve without a calculator or drawing out an imaginary math problem on the table or in the air. The intention is to help students use mental math strategies where appropriate and to deeply understand the concepts.
Thank you for supporting your child and your child's teachers throughout their school career! Without you, your child would not learn as much or be as successful! You are one of his/her BIGGEST role models!
*** Third grade uses the number line, tape diagrams, and number bonds for almost everything we teach ... from numbers, to fractions, to elapsed time.
Fractions on a number line!
Division in a tape diagram!
Unknown groups in number bonds!
