Hour Hand: : Shorter hand that points to the hour (large numbers)
Minute Hand: Longer hand that points to the minutes, or tick marks
Tick Marks: Small lines around the clock that represent minutes
Analog Clock: Standard clock with hands to represent time
Digital Clock: Clock with only numbers to represent time
Number “Time” Line : A line with numbers representing an hour, or more, of time
Interval: The jump on the number line representing a length of time
Start Time: When the time begins in a story problem
End Time: When the time ends in the story problem
Elapsed Time: The time that passes between a start and end time
Students may be given
the START and END time and need to find the ELAPSED TIME
the START time and the ELAPSED TIME
the END time and the ELAPSED TIME
In third grade, however, students stay within an hour. Students are not asked to go across the timeline into a new hour. They will do that in fourth grade!

Look for END TIME?
Plot a point on the minute tick mark for the START TIME. Count forward around the clock by ones or fives with the given elapsed time. Where you land is the END TIME you were looking for.
Look for START TIME?
Plot a point on the minute tick mark for the END TIME. Count backward around the clock by ones or fives with the given elapsed time. Where you land is the START TIME you were looking for.
Look for ELAPSED TIME?
Plot a point on the minute tick mark for the START TIME and for the END TIME. Jump around the clock by ones or fives from START to END. Go back and count your intervals by ones or fives to find the ELAPSED TIME.
Look for END TIME?
Plot a point on the minute interval line for the START TIME. Count forward on the number line by tens, five, or ones with the given elapsed time. Where you land is the END TIME you were looking for.
Look for START TIME?
Plot a point on the minute interval line for the END TIME. Count backward on the number line by tens, five, or ones with the given elapsed time. Where you land is the START TIME you were looking for.
Look for ELAPSED TIME?
Plot a point on the minute interval line for the START TIME and for the END TIME. Jump on the number line by tens, five, or ones from START to END. Go back and count your intervals jumps to find the ELAPSED TIME.
