picture graph: a graph using pictures and a key to organize collected data

key: this explains what to count the pictures by on a picture graph; picture must be exactly the same

bar graph: a graph using bars and a scale to organize data

scale: the numbers on the side of a bar graph to help you know what the graph is counting by

Picture Graphs

These types of graphs use pictures to represent data collected.
There is always a KEY for a pictograph.
- - - The KEY tells you what you are counting by. The KEY in this example is counting by 3's because each ice cream cone picture equals or represents 3 ice cream cones sold.
    - Pictographs are great for multiplication practice!

Bar Graphs

Bar Graphs

These types of graphs use bars to represent data collected.
There is always a SCALE for a bar graph.
- - - The SCALE tell you what the bar graph is counting by. The SCALE in this example is counting by 5's. The SCALE also is telling you how many people chose which color as their favorite.
Bar graphs can be shown vertical like this example, or horizontal.
