Take a look of the virtues below and decide which ones would be best to apply to our health classes so we can set ourselves up for success. If you would like to propose one of these virtues as an option, think of at least one example of how we can demonstrate the virtue during class.
Failure Guided Instruction

Albert Einstein had trouble early in school and did not speak fluently until he was 9.
Elvis Presley sang a different style than anyone in his time and was told by his manager to quit singing.
Thomas Edison made 1,000 unsuccessful attempts at creating a light bulb.
Michael Jordan did not make the Laney High School varsity basketball team.
Oprah Winfrey was told that she was too emotional to be a television host.
Walt Disney was fired from his job at a newspaper company for not being creative enough and then had a failed Laugh-o-gram studios business and went bankrupt.

Notes for Mental and Emotional Health
SMART Goals
Specific – Be specific in what you want to accomplish.
Measurable – Measure when you have achieved your goal.
Achievable – Break down the steps to take.
Relevant – This goal should relate to your personal values.
Timely – Set a deadline of when you should achieve your goal.
The C-O-P-E Method
C = change how one thinks about the stressor. [An example would be thinking on the bright side or finding the silver lining in the stressful situation.]
O = organize with attention to time management. [When a task seems overwhelming, one can break the work down into smaller tasks.]
P = practice relaxation techniques. [When anticipating pressure and feeling anxious, a person can practice stress management activities such as deep breathing or progressive muscular relaxation.]
E = emotions can be managed. [Strong emotions can be managed by re-thinking, trying to see another’s point of view, or positive self-talk.]
C-O-P-E example for a failure:
C - I can learn from my mistakes and improve as a person
O - Break down any work to complete in sections in order to try again
P - Say three positive things about yourself every day
E - Stay positive/determined and be willing to try harder the next time
C-O-P-E example for loss of a loved one:
C - Loved one is in a better place
O - Take each day at a time / hour at a time / minute at a time
P - Deep breathing
E - Grieving is an important part of dealing with a loss, so be sure to express emotions and feelings to others who can support you.
***Remember that a good measure of whether a coping mechanism is negative is whether it increases stress rather than minimizing the stress.
