Differentiated Instruction
The purpose of grades at NFVCSD is to communicate what students know and can do.

Differentiated instruction occurs when instruction is tailored to meet individual needs in a classroom of diverse learners. Differentiation may be based on student readiness, interest, or learning profile.
Teachers can differentiate by modifying at least four classroom elements:
content (what the student needs to learn or how to access the information)
process (learning activities in which the student engages to master content)
product (how the student demonstrates, applies, or extends learning)
learning environment (the way the classroom works and feels)
for CONTENT
reading materials at varying readability levels
texts on tape
small group instruction to re-teach an idea or skill for struggling students, or to extend thinking or skills for advanced learners
presenting ideas through both auditory and visual means
for PROCESS
tiered activities through which all student work toward the same standards but proceed with different levels of support, challenge, or complexity
centers, manipulatives, or hands-on support for students who need them
varying the length of time a student may take to complete a task to allow for additional support or for greater depth
for PRODUCT
allowing options for how to demonstrate learning (e.g., produce a video or podcast, create a puppet show, write a letter, draw a picture with labels)
allowing students to design their own assessments, incorporating required elements
for LEARNING ENVIRONMENT
spaces in the classroom for quiet individual work and for student collaboration
materials that reflect a variety of cultures, family structures, and home settings
routine for how and when to seek assistance from the teacher or a classmate
accommodating learners who need to move around and those who need to sit quietly
