This portfolio shows various skills and project work in Geographic Information Science and Technology

Hi, I am Olushayo Eruja, 'Shayo' for short. My interest in GIS started when i was doing my internship in my third year in undergrad college in 2008 at the Laboratory for Cartography and Remote Sensing at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. Having a Bachelors in Geography from the same college, there was no escaping getting involved with GIS at some point and I am glad i did. GIS has tons of applications and my interest with this technology includes data acquisition and interpretation, geospatial analysis, cartography, database development, deployment and management as well as developing web applications.

During my time in school, I worked extensively with ArcGIS products such as ArcMap, ArcCatalog and GIS Server/Flex. I have worked with developing and updating ARCSDE databases as well as publishing web mapping applications via ArcGIS Server Manager. I worked extensively with spatial and tabular databases in an enterprise environment using a variety of tools, relational database management interfaces, structured query languages (SQL) and GIS software. I used ArcMap and ERDAS Imagine to work with different satellite images, editing, manipulating and deriving critical information from the data obtained. I am able to perform batch processing functions, calling geoprocessing tools and customizing user interfaces by writing script codes using Python. I also learned spatial analysis, computer cartography, spatial statistics, feature editing and digitizing. Data collection using mapping grade global position system and differential correction, editing and exporting the GPS data into a GIS form were also learned. I learned about field research and environmental impact assessment (EIA) while working as an intern at my undergraduate college.

My professional experiences include working as GIS Technician with the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer services for a little over a year. I was able to develop a lot of the skill sets i learned in colleges as well as learn new data analysis and GIS skills. With working int he Emergency Program division of the department, as well as working on different projects with the Department of Health and Human Services gave me the opportunity to use different spatial analysis techniques in aiding decision making across the department.

I have also had the opportunity of working as a GIS analyst with Bechtel corporation where i was involved in using GIS applications on a telecommunications project. Tasks included using GIS for permitting, engineering and construction of a Fiber to The Home network. I was constantly performing daily data quality checks and analysis to make sure that the client deliverable was met accurately including spatial checks to ensure that all data related to the fiber design met different topology rules set by the client.

My current position as a GIS specialist Team lead at Black and Veatch is also related to a telecommunications projects. It provides me with the opportunity to work more with web mapping applications as well as end user training on using this web based fiber network design system. I also create different ArcGIS Server services and database administration.

In my spare time, i enjoy going to the beach, park, playing volleyball, tennis, watching soccer, volunteering with seniors and listening to music.
