Highgate Explorers Class Descriptions

Summer 2024 - July 8 to Aug 9 for Grades 1-3

Week One - July 8-12

- CARNIVAL CAMP: AM Camp, PM Camp, or Full-Day Camp for grades 1-6

What will your school's carnival look like? Costumes, celebrations, and parades are just a few events we could dream up. Join us for a creative and colorful week of fun!

- SUMMER HIGHGATE ACTORS’ THEATER: Full-Day Camp for grades 1-6 

Put on a show! Take to the stage with Ernie Hemingway for a week of practice, learning and rehearsals that will prepare you to put on an amazing performance for friends and family. Students must be able to commit to attending full days all week to be ready for the show.


Week Two - July 15-19

- ISLANDS OF ADVENTURE CAMP: AM Camp, PM Camp, or Full-Day Camp gr 1-6

Did you know there are over 900,000 islands in the world? Let’s turn our camps into island adventures! From water balloons and beach-themed days to learning about island communities around the world, we will splash our way through five amazing days.

- EXPLORERS’ PASSPORT ADVENTURES: Mornings only for grades 1-3

Let's make a passport, hop on a "plane" and travel to Arizona, South Carolina, Belize, Greece and Italy! And of course, we need to create and sample foods from each place!


Week Three - July 22-26

- STORYLAND CAMP: AM Camp, PM Camp, or Full-Day Camp gr 1-6

We are bringing your favorite stories and characters to camp! Action and adventure await you each day as we dive into new worlds and stories through games, performances, and outdoor activities. Share your favorite stories and choose your own adventures!


Week Four - July 29-August 2

- SURVIVE THE UNIVERSE CAMP: AM Camp, PM Camp, or Full-Day Camp gr 1-6

Where will we travel this year? For five days, you will find yourself in a different place in the universe, where you will experience the place through food, challenges, activities, contests, crafts and more. How will you meet these fun challenges on Earth or in space?


Week Five - August 5-9

- MORNINGS AT THE REC: Morning Camp only, No Transportation Provided, gr 1-12

MVSD After School and Swanton Recreation are teaming up to offer a week of FREE morning programming! Join us for crafts, games, outdoor activities, and more at Swanton Recreation from 8am - 12pm for MVSD students entering grades 1 - 12. Additional leadership opportunities available for students in grades 7 - 12.  Breakfast, lunch, and lots of fun provided. Families must provide their own transportation; bus transportation is not available.



Highgate Crossroads Class Descriptions

Week One - July 8-12

- DANCE AROUND THE WORLD: Mornings only for grades 4-6 

Get ready to move! Each week, students will learn a different style of dance, from Irish step dancing (no special footwear needed), to the hula to hip hop. We'll learn about geography, history, culture and, most importantly, how to do the dances! Get your dancing feet ready!   (This special option is on Tuesdays & Wednesdays only; students will join Carnival Camp on the other days this week.)

- DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS: Afternoons only for grades 4-6 (Must attend both weeks 1 & 2)

Explore this imaginative role-playing game of group cooperation and problem-solving skills with Mr. D, the dungeon master, as your guide. He will lead the students on a variety of awesome tales with unexpected twists.

- WORLD PERCUSSION BOOT CAMP: Mornings only for grades 4-6

Get ready to take a rhythmic journey around the world! This percussion class will have you drumming up a beat in no time. We'll explore the history of percussion instruments, from traditional drums to world music wonders. Learn all about creating awesome rhythms from scratch, keeping a steady beat like a pro, and playing alongside your new bandmates. We'll be shaking, drumming, and grooving to music from all corners of the globe. This camp is perfect for anyone who loves to make a joyful noise!

Week Four - July 29-August 2

Highgate Explorers Class Descriptions

Spring Session 2024 - March 11 to May 9 for Grades 1-3

MONDAYS

-BRACELETS, NECKLACES and MAGNETS with Miss Brooklyn: Make a piece of wearable art for yourself, for family and friends, matching sets for besties and more! 

-PAINTING with Miss Kassidy: Paint using various mediums each week. It will be a lot of fun to create with friends and compare techniques with your group.  What is one thing you would like to paint on a canvas to have for years?


TUESDAYS

-CRAFTS TO ADORE with Miss Brooklyn: Spring is ahead and so are some awesome Spring-themed crafts to do with friends. We have some projects in mind but will also be looking for your ideas to make this class your own.

-HIGHGATE ACTORS’ THEATER (HAT): Acting and drama at its best with Ms. Ernie. As a group, you will create a final performance for many to enjoy! (Must attend Tuesdays and Thursdays).

-STEM WITH MISS KASSIDY: Enjoy getting messy and doing experiments?  Learning through hands-on fun will make this class a blast.

WEDNESDAYS

-EXERCISE, GAMES, READING and MORE! This has a little bit of everything! Classes will rotate bi-weekly and do many different activities from yoga and simple exercises to playing games with friends and reading some books together.


THURSDAYS

-HIGHGATE ACTORS’ THEATER (HAT): Acting and drama at its best with Ms. Ernie. As a group, you will create a final performance for many to enjoy! (Must attend Tuesdays and Thursdays).

-LITERACY TIME WITH MS. ADAH: As we wind down from our busy school day, enjoy a story read by Ms. Adah from Highgate Public Library and then dig into a craft.  Ms. Adah is bound to bring some great fun with literacy activities.


Highgate Crossroads Class Descriptions

Spring Session 2024 - March 11 to May 9 for Grades 4-6

MONDAYS

-DUNGEONS & DRAGONS (Gr 5-6): Mr D. leads the kids on super fun and wild role-playing adventures and the kids absolutely love it!

-MENTORING ROCKS!: As you grow older you have more responsibilities and lots of knowledge that can be shared with the younger children in Crossroads.  We are looking for role models to work with the Explorers classes.  If you want some experience with mentoring then we want you!

-PUZZLES, PUZZLES and More!: Riddles, Word searches, Find it, Mazes, Jigsaw Puzzles and More with Mrs. Racine.


TUESDAYS

-HIGHGATE ACTORS’ THEATER (HAT): Acting and drama at its best with Ms. Ernie. As a group, you will create a final performance for many to enjoy! (Must attend Tuesdays and Thursdays)

-MENTORING ROCKS!: As you grow older you have more responsibilities and lots of knowledge that can be shared with the younger children in Crossroads.  We are looking for role models to work with the Explorers classes.  If you want some experience with mentoring then we want you!

-STEM WITH MRS. KATHY: Enjoy getting messy and doing experiments?  This is the class where all that will happen and more!  You will be challenged and come out even more knowledgeable than before.

-CUSTODIAN HELPERS (GR 5-6 ONLY): When the custodial staff is short handed why not help them out?  You will be a rockstar; assisting them with scuff mark removal, emptying garbage/recycling and allowing them time for other projects.

-EXERCISE, GAMES, READING and MORE! This has a little bit of everything! Classes will rotate bi-weekly and do many different activities from yoga and simple exercises to playing games with friends and reading some books together.


THURSDAYS

-CREATIVE ARTS with Mrs. Racine: Get creative with some painting, clay work, cork projects, golf ball animals, jar luminaries, keychains and other crafts.

-HIGHGATE ACTORS’ THEATER (HAT): See Description Above  (Must attend Tuesdays and Thursdays)

-LEARN TO COOK WITH MISS KASSIDY: Learn some basic cooking skills, make some yummy treats and enjoy trying them out with others!

-MUSIC INSPIRES - LEARN VIOLIN!: Are you interested in learning to play an instrument? How about the violin? In partnership with our friends at Vermont Youth Orchestra, students will learn how to properly hold, manage, and play beginning notes on the violin. Each student will learn the beginning skills needed to play a short melody and will be able to borrow a violin and materials to use during the session. There will be a small performance at the end of the session, allowing students to share what they’ve learned with family and friends.
