Attempt to reduce "steering wheel shimmy" by replacing front wheel hub/bearing assemblies with new parts.
Start Date: Apr 5, 2012
Odometer: 308,000 km
Total cost: $334.80
Due to a combination of warped brake rotors, imperfect tires, and old front wheel bearings, my car had a severe amount of steering wheel shimmy (wiggling back and forth) at highway speeds. In order to address the issue, I replaced all suspected components, including the front wheel hub/bearing assemblies. Per unit cost from the BMW dealer was $241.27, so I chose to order from Turner Motorsports, who sells the same component at half the price.
Parts
Installation of the new bearings did help reduce shimmy, but the shimmy wasn't gone completely, even after installing brand new tires, brand new rims, and brand new brakes. Further inspection revealed a worn inner ball joint on the passenger-side control arm. Replacement of the control arm (with ball joints pre-installed) and the control arm bushing completely fixed the shimmy.
