Reading Fluency

Fluency: What is it? Why is it important?

Reading fluency is a child's ability to read words correctly per minute (wcpm). A fluent reader doesn't have to stop and "decode" each word. This means the reader can focus their attention on what the text means. For that reason, fluency is critically important β€” it is the bridge between decoding words and understanding what has been read.

During the school year, your student will be assessed on their reading fluency progress. Achieving a level 3 or 4 average during the trimester indicates your student is proficient.
