Raffles decided that Singapore was to be a free port. On 6 February 1819, Raffles and Tengku Long, the elder son of the Sultan of Johor who as given the title Sultan Hussein, held a ceremony to sign a treaty to allow Raffles to set up a British trading port in Singapore in return for a sum of money every year. This attracted traders from the Malay Archipelago, Arabia, India, China and Europe to come and settle in Singapore.
