The Padang is surrounded by several important landmarks such as Saint Andrew's Cathedral, City Hall, the Old Supreme Court Building and the City Hall MRT Station. It is named after an Indonesian- Minangkabau food called Nasi Padang, which is mostly eaten in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia. It has been used as a venue for a number of events, including the National Day Parades in 2005 and in 2010. The first ever National Day Parade was being held at the Padang in 1966. Since 1995, it has been planned that the National Day Parade would be held there for every five years.
